Ed Sheeran; Small Bump

Jasmine Allday
Release Date: 25th May 2012

Ed Sheeran has recorded music for years but only really burst onto the music scene last year with the release of his first commercial single,’The A Team’. Now, he is releasing his fifth single ‘Small Bump’ off his album ‘+’.

The song is one of my favourites off the album and I was thrilled when I heard he was releasing this song as a single. The meaning behind the song is truly heartbreaking, especially when you find out that it was written about a friend who was going through the situation portrayed in the song.

The haunting vocal laid against such a bare backing track adds to the exposed feel of the song. I can’t fault his tone and the emotion of the song really comes through. The song ends with the lyrics: “You were just a small bump unborn for four months then torn from life / Maybe you were needed up there but we’re still unaware as why”, which leaves such a lasting impression.
