Slam Dunk Festival 2016 | With Confidence Interview

Straight from their Slam Dunk slot, we caught up with Australia’s With Confidence.

The Aussie pop-punkers had just finished their UK tour with As It Is before heading to Slam Dunk for their debut festival slot.

Opening the Fresh Blood Stage ahead of their new album release ‘Better Weather’ , due out on June 17th, we caught up with the drummer Josh Brozzesi and guitarist and vocalist Inigo Del Carmen from the band.

How did it feel to be at Slam Dunk and open the Fresh Blood stage?

Inigo: It was crazy!

Josh: It’s our first festival so it feels pretty crazy, but it’s great. We just played our set and watched ROAM which was sick and now I think we’re just going to get drunk and watch some of our favourite bands.

I: Pretty much most of the bands we love are on this line-up so we’re all stoked. I think we’re just going to spend the rest of the day trying to find out where everyone is and just watch their sets if we can.

Had you heard much about Slam Dunk before and did you have any expectations of the festival?

J: Definitely! We see the line-up come out every year in Australia and we’ve had friends play it like Northlane and a couple of other bands. Actually Heroes For Hire played it one year and they said that everyone calls it ‘slam drunk’, they just said it’s an awesome few days!

I: We were pretty keen!

How have you found your reception in the UK and how the crowds have been on tour?

I: It’s been crazy! The amount of people that turned up to the show and knew our stuff was insane. We’ve been from the south point to the north point…

J: All the way up to Aberdeen!

I: It was sick! We thought in Scotland it would calm down or something.

J: Scotland was sick! They were just chanting ‘here we f*cking go’ and we loved that so much.

I: At both shows in Scotland as well, we were like ‘what the heck?!’, it was massive.

J: It’s just like crazy. We didn’t realise that people have found us on the internet two or three years ago so they were going nuts because they’ve been waiting two or three years and it’s like we’re finally here! It’s our first time overseas so we’ve never seen that before. In Australia, we’re pretty readily available and people see us every few months so it’s really cool. People were bringing up merch and our first little EP and I’m like ‘oh my god I must have mailed that to you like two years ago’ and now we’re signing it, it’s so cool and really nice.

Have you had much time to explore the UK?

J: We actually had a week off when we first got here so we saw quite a bit of London.

I: A lot of us were a bit ill so we couldn’t really go out, but eventually some of us made it out to see Buckingham Palace and Big Ben, all the normal sights!

J: We’ve seen a few castles and things too which has been really cool! In Australia, the history is only like 200 or 300 years, like the oldest building you’ll find is like 1800s, whereas here you’ll be in a normal pub and someone is like ‘oh this pub is from the 1100s’ and it’s just like ‘what the f*ck!’ Something that is one hundred years old is like heritage listed in Australia so it’s super different.

You guys were saying there are a lot of the bands on the line-up you’re desperate to see, if you could pick one you had to collaborate with, who would it be?

J: F*ck! That’s a big one….

I: I think we all love Moose Blood…but The Story So Far are sick!

J: I feel like Panic! (At The Disco), it would be great to work with Brendon.

I: Yeah he’s an insane vocalist!

After Slam Dunk you guys have your debut album coming out next month, what can we expect from the release? Is it similar to your older material?

J: Yeah! It’s along the same vein as ‘Distance’ I think, but then there are tracks that are pop-ier and tracks that are heavier.

I: You can definitely tell were the split is, there are songs that aren’t our normal routine.

J: I think if you like the old stuff you should be able to transition into the new stuff pretty easily. You wouldn’t be like ‘oh my god I didn’t know it was the same band!’

I: We’ve stuck to our roots!

J: Yeah we just experimented as it was our first time doing an album so we had ten songs to do something different so it’s cool!
