EP Review | The One Hundred | Subculture

TOH_E.P_FinalAfter forming in 2012 and performing at many UK club shows throughout the year, The One Hundred are ready to release their debut EP ‘Subculture’.

It all starts with ‘No FKX‘. Starting small but ending massive, the introductory track shows the broad range of genres and talent within the band and really sets the stage for what the rest of the EP is about.

Next comes ‘Breed‘ which starts with more of a metal sound. Then comes a section in the middle which sounds like your next dance anthem, which although may sound a bit random, when listened to it does work surprisingly well within the rest of the track.

Kingsmen‘ sees the introduction of rap, which along with the dance style found in ‘Breed’, it really gives The One Hundred a unique sound and sets them apart from any other band around at the moment. However, some of the latter lyrics in ‘Kingsmen‘ end a little blurred and unrecognizable towards the chorus.

Unleashed‘ starts quite club-pop, with honest and open lyrics, before turning into quite a motivational chant. ‘We fight back‘, one of the lyrics, represents what I think the EP and The One Hundred are all about, and backs up the message portrayed in ‘Breed’. “This is who we are…we are the New Breed“.

Next comes ‘Tale of Two Cities‘ which if I’m honest doesn’t really add anything new to the EP, unlike every other track so far, but with its eerie opening before breaking back into a mixture of metal and rap, it does fit well within the rest of the EP.

Finally is ‘Downfall’, which will precede the EP as a single. It brings together everything you have heard so far, from metal to rap to dance. The repetition  of “this is your downfall”  allows the chorus to become very catchy and easy to sing along too.

Overall, there is something in this EP for everyone no matter what kind of music you are into. The One Hundred  have shown in ‘Subculture’ that they are “the new breed” who are not afraid to jump between very different styles of music.

I would definitely recommend them and ‘Subculture’ – particularly ‘Breed’ and ‘Downfall’ to anyone looking for a new band to listen to this Autumn.
