90’S KIDS | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Heartbeat’

90’S KIDS have unveiled their new nostalgia-tinged feel-good single ‘Heartbeat’.‘Heartbeat’ marks the band’s most personal single to-date, based on carrying someone with you whom you know you’ve lost and even though they aren’t there physically, they’ll always be with you.

Creating a powerful yet addictive dance-along single, tinged with 80’s and 90’s pop, to celebrate the release, 90’s Kids shared with us five tracks that influenced the single.

Post Malone – Multiple tracks
‘Heartbeat’ has a Post Malone vibe to some of the lyrics in the second verse and bridge. We’ve never really delved into the hip-hop realm at all, but in this song it felt really natural and right to draw inspiration from some Post Malone-esque vocal tendencies. In terms of the subject matter, the second verse of ‘Heartbeat’ discusses how technology tethers you to someone no matter how much you try to forget them. It felt interesting and different to mesh that with a Post Malone style vocal melody.

Chase Atlantic – Angeline
The subtle complexities of this song are what made it such a big influence. It sounds so dreamy and simple, yet there is so much going on in the way of production that take it over the top. With ‘Heartbeat’ we took some of that mindset with it.

Joan – Love Somebody Like You
It’s undeniably catchy and yet it doesn’t try to be overly complicated. When we were writing the chorus of ‘Heartbeat’ this was something we took into account. The chorus is really simple and repeats lines multiple times. Rather than letting that bother us, we just kind of went with the flow of what felt right. That’s what it feels like Joan did on this track as well.

The 1975 – Sex
As sparkly and produced as our songs tend to be, we never want to lose the sense of raw energy to them. ‘Sex’ is the epitome of raw energy in pop music and we wanted ‘Heartbeat’ to have a similar type of energy.

THE WLDLFE – Real Ones
THE WLDLFE are friends of ours and we definitely take a lot of influence from what they are doing. In terms of vocal production and the instrumental drop in the song, it’s very similar to what we did with ‘Heartbeat’ in a way.
