Album Review| Ed Sheeran| X

The long-awaited second album from the beloved ginger-haired singer-songwriter has been released and the verdict is clear: it was well worth the wait.

Ed Sheeran’s, Multiply (a.k.a. ‘X’), is filled with the original wit and in-your-face lyrics that his debut album, ‘+, carried throughout its twelve tracks.

This latest release takes everything up a notch. The lyrics are wittier, the “flows” run like rivers, the accompaniment is much fuller and the vocals are stronger than ever. This album truly does multiply everything Sheeran set out to add into the music industry when he debuted.

Opening with One, Sheeran takes us through a smooth transition from his previous work into his latest release. Retaining his iconic guitar skills and vocal prowess that make thousands of fans swoon across the world, the opening track invites you into a love story.

The invitation then becomes a slight warning as his honesty flows into, I’m a Mess. As the first single from the album sets in, Sing takes you through that inevitable next level with Ed. This next level throws, Don’t, into your face, leaving you in speculation as the lyrics are unapologetically raw.

And the rawness does not stop there! Nina, although retaining his previous sound, takes U.N.I. into the next chapter of the story.

But the drizzle of attitude and bluntness dies down as Photograph, Bloodstream and Tenerife Sea take their turn through the speakers. They’re smoother sounds with a gentler feel through the sound waves. The lyrics are still witty and open, but they’re much less direct than the preceding tracks.

The melodic break is strategically broken by Runaway as it resounds with Don’t and Sing to remind you that he’s still got something to say.

The track then spills over into The Man, where Ed gives a certain someone a piece of his mind. Although, the adored ginger does not leave you dwelling in his angst, instead he leaves you Thinking Out Loud, where he declares his love once more. Afire Love closes the album with a personal family story, sending commonality to reign as he salutes his listeners.

Overall, Multiply is for anyone who likes an edgy sound. For Ed Sheeran fans, it’s one that y’all already love. It’s a chill-out album just as much as it is an album that you belt-out. You’ll love singing along and attempting to rap alongside Ed.
