This latest release from Reptile Youth is sending shivers down people’s spines as they listen to the nerve-tingling tunes compiled in ‘Rivers That Run For A Sea That Is Gone’.
Above opens the album with alluring vocals and a mesmerizing accompaniment. It gets you swaying no stop, leaving you fixated on what’s to come. By the time Colours hits your system, you’re ready to rock‘n’roll for the rest of the night.
As the title track of the album, Rivers That Run For A Sea That Is Gone, demands your attention from the get go. Rugged and edgy from the first note, you are drawn into the enticing combination of the electric guitar and techno beats. With attitude trickling in from the previous tracks, Structures, comes in just as demanding, it’ll have you tapping, clapping and dancing wherever you are.
With a powerful first note, Where You End I Begin is as witty as its title. Mixing things up slightly, the edginess is stripped away and a pinch of the 80’s is drizzled over this track. It’s playful and is layered with cheekiness and laughter – it’s a short sweet turn for just a few minutes.
Kicking the cheekiness aside, We’re All In Here comes straight back in with the same punchiness as the opening tracks. It’s not as heavy, but it still has the extra hit to make you bang your head and raise your fist. Two Hearts allows the edginess to creep back in as it opens with an awesome riff. The techno beats are more dominant in this track, but never override the guitars or the drums. The attitude is back on track (ha – get it?), but it still retains much of that 80’s cheekiness from Where You End I Begin.
JJ takes away that 80’s vibe and brings it straight back to how the album started – mesmerizing, which is a great way to slowly bring the album to a close. All Of The Noise follows in suit, giving the album that last ounce of attitude and grit just before Diseased By Desire closes the album. Diseased By Desire calls your attention from the get go, as though leaving listeners wanting more.
Overall, the album resonates clearly with that of the late Aussie band, INXS. In saying that, there’s a lot of intriguing lyrics and alluring vocals molded into psychedelic tunes that leave you wanting more. Big, big, big KUDOS to Reptile Youth, this album is TOP KNOTCH!
