It’s no secret that the ideal opening track on an album should also be able to transcend to the perfect opening track at a gig.
You Me At Six’s album ‘Cavalier Youth‘ gets off to an absolutely stunning start with ‘Too Young to Feel This Old.’
The beauty of You Me At Six has always been their distinctive vocals, but if you were to take away lead singer Josh Franceschi’s voice, even the backing track sounds exactly like 2008 and their ‘Take Off Your Colours’ days.
The next track ‘Lived a Lie’ was released at the end of last year and everything about it is old school You Me At Six and this is why you can’t help but love it.
The track ‘Cold Night’ is one of my favourites. It’s that point where a beautifully sculpted album really starts coming together. It’s one of those songs that could make your stomach ache with emotion because you can not only relate to the words, but to the sound too. Two minutes in and I was already singing along.
And in true YMA6 style, the next song brings the tempo and the mood straight back up again. The next few songs are a little heavier than their usual and ‘Be Who You Are’ might give you a little surprise. With a little twinge of folk and a pinch of country the interlude track neatly breaks up the bottom heavy album.
Going out with a bang, the album ends with ‘Wild Ones’. It’s a typical, slow start while building up emotion and then they have once again absolutely nailed it.
Whether you loved You Me At Six when it all began, discovered them last year, or this is the first you’re hearing of them, it’s more than likely you will love this release.
It might seem clichéd but You Me At Six have totally pulled it off with this album. It’s the same sound that has been evolving over 6 years and will continue to do so for many more to come.
