Approachable Members Of Your Local Community | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Small Change’

Australian indie-funk quartet Approachable Members Of Your Local Community have released their new single ‘Small Change’.

The track is taken from the band’s forthcoming debut EP ‘Love Thy Neighbour’, due out on 14th February via AntiFragile.

Speaking of the track, the band explained the single’s meaning became of increased poignancy and importance in the light of the ongoing Australian bushfire tragedies: “This summer has been challenging for so many we know and love, and especially for many whose experiences have been unimaginably traumatic and devastating. In the face of a national crisis, the country has galvanised to take back tomorrow. With an outpouring of support for our firefighters and affected communities, it’s clear that small change can have a big impact.”

Following the release of ‘Small Change’, we caught up with the band to discover 5 tracks that influenced the single.

Paul Kelly – From St. Kilda to Kings Cross | Listen via Spotify
Paul Kelly is an Australian music legend and has been for several decades. This song is a celebration of our hometown Melbourne. ‘Small Change’ is a song about our home, and more specifically the suburb St Kilda that Paul Kelly speaks of in this Australian anthem.

Lime Cordiale – Inappropriate Behaviour | Listen via Spotify
The biggest influence we took from this song is the incredible contagiousness of the choruses. The lyrics and melodies of the choruses in this song are seriously catchy and have been stuck in our heads for days on end. (In a very good way!) We wrote ‘Small Change’ with the intention for it to really stick in your head.

Holy Holy – Faces | Listen via Spotify
This song features in its several crazy vocal build-ups into its choruses, which since hearing we desperately wanted to somehow include in a song. You will hopefully hear this just before both choruses in ‘Small Change’! We have worked with Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy’s guitarist and producer) for a couple of years and his production is a massive influence for us.

Maggie Rogers – Alaska | Listen via Spotify
This song might not sound so similar to ‘Small Change’, but Maggie’s music is just so outrageously fantastic. We were listening to her record a lot in 2019, and ‘Alaska’ is a song that embraces the notion of place. Like ‘Small Change’ it channels the importance of a place, and the meaning place and community can create. We think those similar ideas form the basis of Small Change.

Florence & The Machine – You’ve Got the Love | Listen via Spotify
This song is anthemic to the maximum. We really hoped we could make ‘Small Change’ some kind of anthem for our local home St Kilda. Not in a ‘We are The World’ way but in the same way Florence achieves this amazing melody that you know immediately, even if you have never heard the song.
