Beach Riot | 4 tracks that influenced ‘Serial Scruff’

Following the release of their new single ‘Serial Scruff’, Beach Riot have shared the influences behind the single.

Out now via Killing Moon, the single was written by frontman Rory O’Connor who explained: “(it) started off whilst watching a documentary on a serial killer and it got me thinking about the mindset of that person, not that I could ever truly know…”

To give us an insight into the track, Rory shared four singles that shaped the release…

‘Aurora Borealis’ – The Meat Puppets | Listen via Spotify

This one song massively influenced me on our new single. It’s just an instrumental, but it’s got the most incredible cascading, reflective guitar that you can almost imagine dancing off the canyons in some distant mystical desert…at least I can anyway! I can’t put a word on it, but it just sets off my synesthesia big time with certain colours and feelings, and I used that to get the right feeling for my song.

‘Someone’s in the Wolf’ – Queens of the Stone Age | Listen via Spotify

Undoubtedly ‘Serial Scruff’ is way more pop than this, but there’s something beautifully haunting about this QOTS song that just gets me every time. I really wanted something in that world of sludge and bleakness, but with a Beach Riot catchy melody chucked in.

‘Bring Back The Sound’ – Part Chimp | Listen via Spotify

Part Chimp are this insanely noisy and loud old Brighton band that kinda have this cult status around here. Apparently, John Peel once said their album was the loudest he’d ever heard! Anyway, this song is not really anything like ‘Serial Scruff’ BUT it has the most insanely amazing intro that just goes off like a nuclear bomb. I wanted to do something similar, albeit I’ve gone fuzz and sludge.

‘Invisible Sun’ – The Police | Listen via Spotify

A bit left-field this one.. but the overall vibe and feel of this song just gets me every time. It definitely influences the single lyrically, and even though it’s got more of a lead synth line compared to our guitars, the melodies are totally in the same ballpark.
