The Strokes – You Only Live Once | Listen via Spotify
This song is, without fail, something I put on every time I need to get in the right headspace for the day! The Strokes in general have this swag I’m always inspired by whilst writing. It’s like a little dose of dopamine, and I’ve been listening to it for years, I’m never sick of it.
Oliver – Myb | Listen via Spotify
I’m obsessed with this song sonically. When you blast it through a pair of big headphones, you’re in a totally different world. It’s so simple musically, however, there are lots of cool sounds and subtle changes that keep the song feeling fresh in every section. Inspiring production. BIG CHOON!
Calvin Harris – Yeah Yeah Yeah La La La | Listen via Spotify
My oh my! What can I say to express my whole-hearted love for this song? Every pre-drinks, every party, every gathering; this will be on my playlist. It’s funky, the synths are weird, wacky, and tight, meanwhile, the vocals have so much character. It’s got such a wonderful bounce and optimism! I think this song taught me to never undermine the power of the “la la la “ section of a song.
Your Smith – Debbie | Listen via Spotify
I love this song! It’s put together so beautifully. I’ve always found the way the harmonies are blended to be so satisfying. There are so many subtle melodies going on from the moment you press play. There is such a confident use of percussion, I’m a sucker for percussion!
Dua Lipa – Pretty Please | Listen via Spotify
There are a lot of indisputable bangers on Dua’s most recent album. I remember this song coming up and actually losing my mind at every section. It fired me up, I got straight on the computer to try and play with the tracks I was working on. The production is so tight and subtle. They really went with a “less is more” feel. Even when lots of stuff is going on there seems to be this spacious feeling. The pre-chorus melody has not left my mind since I first heard it. In fact, me and my partner regularly recite it to one another.
