Blair Davie | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Lovely’

Blair Davie has released their new single ‘Lovely’.

Written and produced alongside Joe Rubel (Ed Sheeran, Maisie Peters), ‘Lovely’ is dedicated to the trans community as an anthem for self-acceptance and discovery, calling to those struggling with their identity to feel completely unapologetic about who they truly are.

Speaking about ‘Lovely’, Blair said: “For as long as I can remember I’ve suppressed and hidden parts of me I didn’t want the world to see. The world can be so unkind to things that are different. I never spoke about it with anyone and had become so used to being someone I truly wasn’t that I barely even thought about it. Then one day last year I watched an episode of Queer Eye about a transgender person just letting themselves be who they are and celebrating that and it awoke something in me. Being unapologetically who I am can be terrifying and difficult but every day that I try, I find that I shine a little bit brighter.”

To celebrate their single release, Blair shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘Lovely’.

Orla Gartland – Zombie | Listen via Spotify
Writing with Joe Rubel is always so fun and he’s one of the few people that can manage to get an upbeat song out of me. So I came in that day with ‘Zombie’ in mind as I was obsessed with it at the time, and ‘Lovely’ is the song we came out with.

Jake Wesley Rogers – Cause Of A Scene | Listen via Spotify
When I heard this song I was reminded about why I want to make music. It made me feel safe and seen. Thank you TikTok algorithm for that one hehehe!

Dodie – She | Listen via Spotify
Another queer anthem! Dodie and all these artists all have songs that if I’d heard them when I was younger, I’d have figured everything out a lot faster. It’s so healing to find music that grabs your hand and shows you that you’re not alone. That’s all I want with my music too – I write it for 14 year old Blair and I know that doing that will help other people too.

Katy Perry – Teenage Dream | Listen via Spotify
Although the song was not directly inspired by Katy Perry, I was really anxious when we were shooting the artwork and video for ‘Lovely’. I asked to put some Katy Perry on the speaker and that got me to loosen up and have fun with the shoot which was really important!! Everyone was singing along and it was so cute and I’m so proud of what we made that day.

Martin Luke Brown – Grateful | Listen via Spotify
I think Martin’s new record is absolutely glorious and hits all the right emotional beats. This album is all I’m listening to currently. It’s so fun and upbeat with beautiful calm and melancholic moments, it’s just everything!
