Led Zeppelin – The Rain Song | Listen via Spotify
I remember the first time I ever heard this song, it was like being hit by a ton of bricks. Robert Plant sings “speak to me only with your eyes, it is to you I give this tune” and I remember my 14 year old self nearly falling over at the beauty of it all. I wanted to write just like that. This song moves like waves washing over you, just one of the all-time greats.
Anita Baker – Angel | Listen via Spotify
This is the ultimate love song for me, a real grown-up love song. Anita is talking about things that you can only really understand if you’ve been in real love before, but even listening to it as a child made me yearn to figure it out and find that feeling. And that voice! You can’t beat it.
Stevie Wonder – Golden Lady | Listen via Spotify
From top to bottom, this song embodies joy in a way that I had never heard before, and that I’m always trying to recreate. You journey through the song, a gorgeous tale of love, and reach its epic conclusion with 101 key changes, each one reaching up higher and higher and you can feel your fingers grazing heaven. Leave it to Stevie, of course.
Amy Winehouse – Back to Black | Listen via Spotify
The queen of heartbreak does it best here, I feel like I’ve been chasing this vibe since the time I heard this song. From the moment the piano begins, the walls around you begin to be painted black, and you can just feel the pain oozing from this track. There is such a beauty to the rawness of this song.
Aretha Franklin – One Step Ahead | Listen via Spotify – The verses of this song sound so put together, like you’ve convinced yourself you can deal with the pain of heartache. Then you hit the center of this song, and you hear Aretha wailing “it’s too soon to forget you, it’s too late to be free!” That will break your heart even on your best day. Aretha is always masterful, but something about this song just kicks you right in the gut. This is pure soul, and something that is ever-inspiring for me.
