Dancing On Tables | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Transpose’

Working with award-winning producer Femke Weidema, Dancing On Tables recently released their second EP ‘Transpose’.

The new release features four of the band’s recent singles alongside an additional bonus track, a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Dancing In The Dark’.

Speaking of the EP, the band explained the release came around amidst a transition period: “Since the last EP we have had a sort of transition period going on, we knew this year was going to have a lot of change going on and working together was key but we have come out together stronger than we ever were before. We wanted a title that reflected the last year in our lives within the band, and ‘Transpose’ seemed like the perfect title, the idea of changing multiple things.”

With the new EP already racking up listens, adding to the band’s 2.5 million streams on Spotify, we caught up with Dancing On Tables to discover 5 tracks that influenced ‘Transpose’.

Parquet Courts – Wide Awake
We went to see Parquet Courts at The Great Escape in Brighton and their live show was one of the best I’ve seen. This song especially makes you nod along from the second it starts, which is something we love having in our tracks. That aim helped us when we rearranged ‘Colour Me Good’ from a softer almost reggae style song into the one that we released.

Jack White – Lazaretto
I’ve had White Stripes albums since I can remember so Jack White has always been an influence of mine. While we were on a trip to Nashville we visited Third Man Records, owned by Jack White and full of his musical history. On the way from there to a write, we had his ‘Lazaretto ‘album on. It was then we decided to try and write a song that took our sound down a heavier route so it was only natural that a track from that album was a huge influence behind ‘Stereo’.

Sigrid – High Five
We’ve all been listening to a lot of Sigrid in the past couple of years. I love the way her songs swell into the chorus using sequencers and synthesisers. We wanted to try this out on a song and ‘Black’ worked out as the perfect song. ‘Black’ started off as a totally acoustic track and we knew we didn’t want to take it down a rock route, so turned to influences of songs like ‘High Five’ to create sequencers and synthesisers which swells into the chorus.

Big Country – In a Big Country
As a band, Big Country have been a huge influence to us both musically and growing up in Dunfermline. We wanted to write a song that paid homage to Dunfermline and was about remembering your roots. ‘In a Big Country’ is a great feel good song with a driving feel and this was highly influential when we were writing ‘Wonderland’.

Bruce Springsteen – Dancing in the Dark
We decided to cover this song for the EP when we were in America stuck inside due to severe weather warnings and discussing the track listing for the EP. We knew we wanted to do a cover for it, but were indecisive about what to do. We started playing ‘Dancing in the Dark’ on the acoustic guitar and loved it so much we recorded it there and then.
