The Britpop Hour is a whistlestop journey through the era of Britpop.
Oasis. Blur. Suede. Turns out Britpop wasn’t a genre at all – it was a moment in time.
Music journalist Marc Burrows Edinburgh Fringe show timing is spot on while Oasis arrive in Edinburgh, he steps onto the Underbelly stage to take audiences on an engaging journey through the highs, swagger, and stories of the Britpop era.
From dissecting nonsensical lyrics to calling out song similiarities, Marc’s knowledge shines throughout. His craft for storytelling blends personal anecdotes with musical facts and a few jokes thrown into the mix. However, the biggest laughs on the night were from delving into Liam Gallagher’s previous Tweets.
Cleverly written, the show intertwines the story of Marc’s step son, Oscar, who hasn’t embraced music ‘quite’ as passionately as Marc. By the finale, this thread of the tale wraps up in a way that prompts audible “aww”s and “wow”s from the audience.
At times, the show pace tips into being a little too frantic, leaving some jokes without the breathing space they need. On this evening, this comes across as a nervous energy than a reflection of the show’s substance.
One consistent theme emerging through the Fringe shows I’ve seen this year is the unifying power of music and its ability to bring people together. Whether it’s reconnecting with old friends or meeting new ones, music unites people in a way that evokes emotions unlike any other art form.
With a throwback soundtracked with great songs, fascinating stories, and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, Britpop fans are in for a treat.
