Friendly Fests Scotlands aim to make music festivals safer for all

A new website has launched in Scotland aimed at portraying the landscape of current policies within Scottish music festivals towards preventing sexual harassment and sexual assault.

Launched early this year, Friendly Fests features a two-column dataset showcasing whether a music festival has published a clear policy on its website towards preventing sexual harassment and sexual assault.

Out of its original research, the data shockingly found that only 2 out of 60 festivals across Scotland displayed a clear formal policy on their website.

Created by three Scottish grassroots feminist organisations, POWA Scotland, Fanny Riot and Popgirlz, the dataset is part of a campaign for all Scottish festivals to display zero tolerance anti-sexual violence policies on their websites, as a commitment to the safety of people attending.

Speaking of the campaign, Rachel Alice Johnson from Popgirlz said: “Friendly Festivals in Scotland is a crucial campaign that aims to ensure the safety and health of attendees and workers at Scottish music festivals. Festivals should be fun and sociable, where music can be enjoyed safely.”

This dataset is hoped to open up conversations with festivals across Scotland regarding the issue of sexual assault and misconduct in festival spaces.
