Greatest Hits | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Volume 2’

Greatest Hits have released their new EP ‘Volume 2’.

Blending a kalediscope of genres from 70’s groove and funk to indie pop and soul, their euphoric releases present energy-fuelled singles taking you on a musical journey.

Speaking of their sound, frontman Ryan Cooper explained: “At its core, Greatest Hits is about handling the heavy things, lightly. We want to flip it on its head – laugh at our insecurities, and point out our struggles, while having a good time!”

To celebrate the release of their new EP ‘Volume 2’, we caught up with Greatest Hits to discover 5 tracks that influenced the release.

Chaka Khan – Like Sugar | Listen via Spotify
We were all so obsessed with the video for this song, and the music feels so damn good! It’s such a strong representation of what we aspire to be. The percussion and weird little sound effects make this tune and definitely encouraged us to throw some triangle in the mix.

Alice Clark – Don’t Wonder Why | Listen via Spotify
When finishing the lyrics for ‘Nuclear Love’, we wanted to subtly drop in the name of the song that the main character is singing about. We had a long list of our favourite love songs, and this one came out on top. It’s easy to imagine someone cruising in their car and reminiscing about their crush when this song comes on.

The Clash – Rock The Casbah | Listen via Spotify
This one mainly gets a mention for the guitar sounds. There is so much attitude on a hugely groovy song. As always, Joe Strummer’s storytelling is a big inspiration (as it probably is to so many songwriters). What’s better than rock ‘n’ roll jet pilots??

Mac DeMarco – On The Level | Listen via Spotify
The low end on this track is chef’s kiss delicious! The way the synth, bass, and kick all feel together is so great! As far as Mac goes, this track is a personal favourite, and was referenced when it came to mixing our songs – which just so happened to be done by Shags Chamberlain, who mixed ‘On The Level’, so he knew what to do!

INXS – Need You Tonight | Listen via Spotify
INXS weren’t a band that we’d really dug into before, but interestingly, they came up several times in the process of making this EP. This song in particular is so perfectly crafted. The sonics, and the way the parts work off together, are very indicative of the kind of thing we aim for when putting a song together.
