Jawbreaking Jewelry

We have discovered a small, handcrafted business located in Cary, North Carolina. Owned by 17-year-old Aly Silverio who hand makes all the original pieces herself primarily using polymer clay. As of right now, Aly sells all her merchandise from her own online store that she started almost 3 years ago, when she was only 15.

Jawbreaking Jewelry sponsor bands such as Amely (Fearless Records), Ally Burnett, The Graves and the product’s have been seen on Sierra of VersaEmerge on her episode of World Of Jenks. As well as Jess from The Summer Set, The Bigger Lights and much more!

Over the past few years of the business’ existence, Aly has sold thousands of pieces to customers all over the world. This summer, she will be vending at 7 Vans Warped Tour dates; Ventura, CA; Pomona, CA; Uniondale, NY; Oceanport, NJ; Charlotte, NC; Orlando, FL; West Palm Beach, FL.

We caught up with the company to find out more.

What was the initial story behind starting the company?
It’s not a very exciting story! I essentially didn’t want a “real” summer job. I was too lazy for that. I saw people made polymer clay jewelry online and I wanted to give it a try. Never in a million years did I think it’d turn out as successful as it is now.

Where do you gain the inspiration for your pieces from?
I get inspiration from everything, music, personal experiences, and customer feedback, but I try to make all the pieces have some sort of meaning or background to them. The most recent line I release was called the Heartbreaking Spring line. Me and my friends got together and started throwing metaphorical symbols that could be turned into necklace pendants out of nowhere, so the line was inspired by boys in our lives haha. There’s a description for every one of those necklaces, that way people can relate to that piece of jewelry

Which item on the site is your best seller?
It’s safe to say that the big dream catcher necklace is the most popular!

Why did you decide to name the site ‘Jawbreaking Jewellery’?
This too, not a very exciting story haha! But I was with one of my best friends when I was trying to figure out the name for my small little business. I wanted to have it alliterate with the word “jewelry” so that it would flow. From there, we were looking up words that started with J. We came across the words Jawdropping and Jawbreaker and combined the two and it was like “Alright cool, this sounds good!” and I guess I kind of just stuck with it!

Which item is your own personal favourite?
I love the big dream catcher necklace, as well as the marbled feather necklace that came out in the most recent line. I wear them all the time!

How did you realise you had the talent to make jewellery?
Hmmm.. I think that when I saw other people doing it, I was like “Psh. I could do that myself!” I basically self-taught myself to make everything.

Do you have plans to expand your site?
Indeed I do! We’re in the works of some t-shirt and other apparel designs, and the summer line is coming out early this year. It should be released in late March 2011.
