KIDS have released their new EP ‘Love and the City 1’.
The EP release comes ahead of the band’s summer festival slots including The Great Escape, Secret Garden Party and Y Not Festival.
Speaking of the single, Beau Blaise said: “Our self-produced debut EP ‘Love and the City 1’ was born out of heartbreak. While working long term in a studio in Wales, I broke up with my girlfriend due to the distance. Then moved back to my hometown, London, reconnected with my childhood friend Alex, we wrote these songs and formed KIDS. The EP tells a story of growth and explores why some early relationships don’t last.”
To celebrate their EP release, KIDS shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘Love and the City 1’.
Johnny Cash – Boy Named Sue | Listen via Spotify
A lot of the songs on this EP are story songs. This is my favourite story song of all time. It’s a sad, funny song about a boy named Sue finding and fighting his dad. I love the message of the dad naming his boy Sue to make him stronger and the ending line. Listened to it 100s of times but still keeps me hooked from start to finish.
The Streets – Could Well Be In | Listen via Spotify
Mike Skinner’s one of my favourite artists period. Always relatable and shows the beauty in imperfection better than anyone else. I love this song and how it describes a normal situation in an interesting way. You feel like you’re in his head having his thoughts and that’s what I wanted to capture on this EP. Also, the production on this track has that kinda groovy happy slightly wonky bop we have on a lot of tracks.
Jamie T – Back In The Game | Listen via Spotify
I love Jamie T, definitely a big influence on our sound. I think this track is great. It feels massive and euphoric to me and there’s nothing in it, just his vocal and an acoustic bass. I tried to channel a bit of that percussive driving guitar playing in Worthy.
Chance the Rapper – Interlude (That’s Love) | Listen via Spotify
I was thinking about what influenced this EP sound and production-wise. One of the albums which did the most is Chance the Rapper’s ‘Acid Raps’. His sound is more electronic than us but the way he puts his beats together in a groovy organic way is a big influence. This is my favourite song on the album. It’s a pure simple message and builds in a beautiful way. “Ain’t nothing better than falling in love”.
Hak Baker – Conundrum | Listen via Spotify
This EP is all about memories of being in London, I want them to feel like memories. As soon as I hear this song it feels like I’m back at school on summer holiday. If these songs can transport people half as much as this song takes me back I’ll be happy.
