The LaFontaines celebrated the release of their third album ‘Junior’ with a sold out headline show at The Caves in Edinburgh.
Playing a gig on a Monday in the capital isn’t exactly a scenario that would fill most bands with hope. That is unless you’re The LaFontaines.
Heading East to celebrate their cracking album release, the trio put on a show to remember with a blend of tracks from their 11-year catalogue.
Within just one song, frontman Kerr Okan had the crowd acting as if it was the encore. Revved up and ready to go within one beat, bodies were grooving along, hands were swaying and lyrics being belted out as he clambered his way onto the barrier to join the crowd in a singalong. There’s no denying he’s a fantastic frontman, not only during each song but in between with banter aplenty. He commanded not only the stage but the entire venue, from getting amongst the crowd on the floor for a dance and some selfies to finding his way up to the balcony to join the back of the crowd.
The gig marked the first time we’ve seen the band as a trio and it was impossible to tell it had been any other way. Drummer Jamie Keenan had especially slotted right into his ‘new’ lead vocal role, stealing some of the spotlight (sorry Kerr!) and bringing a new layered sound to the tracks including new releases ‘Switch Out The Light’ and the new ballad-esque ‘Pro’.
Taking you on a musical journey, with new album tracks peppered in between, old favourites including ‘Under The Storm’ and ‘King’ which received an incredible reception from the crowd – particularly providing a singalong for those who hadn’t quite brushed up on the new album lyrics yet. Throwing back to these singles also made the band’s versatility standout, with new two singles sounding the same.
The LaFontaines have created a unique blend of indie infused rap-rock which is an addictive sonic treat. Each single overflows with energy and revs up to singalong-ready choruses, with tracks which seem written with the live element in mind. There’s only so much any record can encapsulate in its recorded form. Their new album was an instant hit for us, but the night proved that The LaFontaines tracks are made to be performed live and are brought to life within a sweaty gig setting.
After us (shamefully) missing a few tours, the night brought it all back why The LaFontaines continue to be one of Scotland’s best live acts.
As Kerr ended his thanks saying “it’s been one of the best Monday nights I’ve had”, we think the entire room wholeheartedly agreed!
A seamless set flowing with tunes and bursting with energy, what more could you want?
