lotusbliss | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Bittersweet’

lotusbliss have released their new EP ‘Bittersweet’.

The four-track EP from the Canterbury brother trio is self-described as a blend of “anger, nostalgia and forgiveness sit together side by side”.

To celebrate their EP release, the band shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘Bittersweet’.

The War on Drugs – An Ocean In Between The Waves | Listen via Spotifyfoals

For us, The War on Drugs have been a major reference in lots of our style. Their blend of energy and ethereality is super inspiring as that has also been a key part of the sound we’ve developed, and this particular track has really embodied that. You can hear glimpses of this in ‘The Horror’ particularly.

Ben Howard – End of The Affair | Listen via Spotify
The whole of Ben Howard’s ‘I Forgot Where We Were’ album is beautiful – but the second half of ‘End of the Affair’ is something else – the echoing rhythms combined with the dreamlike guitars and vocals are nothing short of euphoric. This section was a major influence for our track ‘Reculver’.

Foals – Exits | Listen via Spotify
Such a groovy tune but at the same time with a magic sprinkle of moodiness, this track was influential in writing ‘Thunder In The Room’ for that exact reason. Being UK indie-rock kings, Foals have influenced us a lot but this track is one of our favourites.

PVRIS – Things Are Better | Listen via Spotify
We particularly love the synth-scaping on this track. It’s subtle at times but really add loads of interest to the song, and those parts certainly helped birth ideas for how we could use the synths in our song Cedar. Also, Lynn Gunn is just rad.

Worship – House of Glass | Listen via Spotify
This band was fairly short-lived – they only ever released a handful of tracks before keyboardist Jordan Fish joined Bring Me The Horizon – but their moody/groovy sound (you might be noticing a trend) has been really influential on our sound in general, particularly for Josh. There are moments all over the place on our music that have been inspired by their songs.
