lotusbliss have released their mini LP ‘Deafening and Silent’.
Speaking of their EP, Josh Gauton said: “We don’t just rock up into a room and all harmonise together. We all need our space to work on things separately before bringing them together. Often if you’re coming together as a band, it’s over some sort of pre-existing genre love. Whereas it wasn’t that for us, we started with the relationship and worked out the rest.”
To celebrate the release of ‘Deafening and Silent’, lotusbliss shared with us 5 tracks that influenced the LP.
Tears for Fears – Everybody Wants to Rule the World
We (particularly Josh) are big fans of T4F, they are total masters of pop songwriting without compromising on musicality. We particularly love the often-shuffling rhythms in their music as well as their sparkly guitar tones, both of which you can hear referenced throughout ‘Deafening and Silent’ but particularly on ‘Vent Violent’.
Queens of the Stone Age – Go With the Flow
In this record we wanted to push our sound slightly into grittier spaces, incorporating more rock elements without sounding out-and-out rock. Queens of the Stone Age’s music is energetic and rocky but they somehow never sound heavy heavy, and we wanted to lean into some of that magic on D&S. The classic QOTSA guitar tone exemplified in ‘Go With The Flow’ was referenced in our gutsier songs, in particular on ‘Tear Me Apart’.
Daughter – Be On Your Way
On the other end of the indie rock spectrum, Daughter’s ‘Be On Your Way’ influenced multiple songs on D&S but none more than ‘Blue Hour’. ‘Be On Your Way’ had released not long before we got together for a writing session, and we decided to do something that we’d never done before in trying to write a song like it. The result was very much a lotusbliss song in all senses, but Daughter’s beautiful writing and composing influenced that journey.
The War on Drugs – Harmonia’s Dream
The interplay of synths, guitars and driving rhythms that The War on Drugs do so spectacularly have influenced lotusbliss since our inception, and this time round the song that captured us was ‘Harmonia’s Dream’. You can hear synth influence across D&S, and particularly in the sparkly synths on ‘Halo’.
Wolf Alice – Lipstick On The Glass by Wolf Alice
Another example of wistful and delicate rock music, Wolf Alice have long influenced our music. We love the choral-like arrangements they achieve across their music, which is something we attempt to achieve in our music too, blending our three voices together across the songs. ‘Lipstick On The Glass’ is a stunning song and great example of that vocal composing.
