Low Girl have released their new single ‘Handbrake’.
The track is the lead single taken from their recently announced album ‘Is It Too Late To Freak Out?’, due for release on October 22nd via AWAL.
To celebrate their single release, Low Girl shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘Handbrake’.
Alvvays – Red Planet
Sarah: While it didn’t directly influence my writing, the ambience of this track and the mood it evokes is forever burned into my brain. It’s not too busy and everything that’s there serves an emotional purpose.
Hazel English – Make it Better
Brad: This is where my love of dream pop began which is a huge part of the reason I wanted to join the band. My bass part was very much influenced by the simplicity and emotion of the rhythmic bass strumming in this song. I also wanted to capture the effectiveness of high reverb guitars following the bass rhythm, while maximising the prettiness.
Pom Poko – Champion
Tom: ‘Champion’ impacted us even though its release came after Handbrake was written. It’s a really restrained song (especially by Pom Poko’s standards) that kicked off a huge album campaign. It reminded us that singles don’t always have to be immediate, and gave us the confidence to lead with something similarly uncomplicated and heartfelt.
Sufjan Stevens – Out of Egypt (Into The Great Laugh Of Mankind…)
Toby: This track (and Sufjan’s music in general) always pops into my head when working on an arpeggiated section. It’s somewhat tricky to create a sense of tension and excitement whilst also trying to capturing a smooth meditative tone but with Handbrake i tried to get the best of both worlds.
October Drift – Bleed
Sarah: This was regularly circulating my headphones around the time Handbrake was written. We had just finished a tour with October Drift, and it’s clear to see now how much that influenced my writing at the time.
