Lucy McWilliams | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Break My Own Heart’

Lucy McWilliams

Lucy McWilliams has released her new single ‘Break My Own Heart’.

The track comes ahead of her appearances at Electric Picnic and Ireland Music Week.

Speaking about the new release, Lucy said: “’Break My Own Heart’ is about self-sabotage within a relationship; being scared of being close to someone so you intentionally push them away before they can cause heartbreak to you. It’s that fear of rejection and preparing yourself for the hurt before they can hurt you.”

To celebrate the single release, Lucy shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘Break My Own Heart’.

The Weeknd – How Do I Make You Love Me | Listen via Spotify
I mean everything he does is amazing; we were listening to loads of his stuff every day in the studio. I think we were trying to get life and fun in the song, and really keep it upbeat; [make something that] makes you want to move to it!

Joy Division – Transmission | Listen via Spotify
When Josh [McEwen] brought in the driving bass at the second verse we were trying to explore the darker side to the song and the sentiment and it reminded us of Transmission by Joy Division.

Future Islands – Seasons (Waiting On You)| Listen via Spotify
Charlie kept putting this song on. For me it gives you that feeling of after a night out, the sun’s coming up, that warmth and full sound of the synths; there’s something so comforting about it.

Hooverphonic – Anger Never Dies | Listen via Spotify
The different harmonies and the fullness of the song with the strings coming in and out definitely influenced us; we always had the track on . The way the chorus opens up is so beautiful and simple in some ways, with the strings following the melody, [it] sits so perfectly .

The War On Drugs- Red Eyes | Listen via Spotify
We were working on a few tracks in and out, always listening and trying to reference different things, but I feel a song we always went back to (at least in my mind) was Red Eyes.
