Make Friends | 5 tracks that influenced ‘When Nothing’s Said’

Make Friends have released their new single ‘When Nothing’s Said’.

Their fourth track kicks off the band’s 2020 schedule, following the release of 2019’s debut EP ‘Hi’ which landed them radio support and Maida Vale Studio live session slots.

Returning with a harder hitting track, the new single showcases a grittier side to the band.

Speaking of the single, guitarist David Thomas said: “‘When Nothing’s Said’ is about experiencing intense paranoia from the idea that your partner is being unfaithful to you, to the point that it’s making you think irrational and unhealthy thoughts. Despite the fact that these thoughts might ultimately stem from nothing, you can’t help but think of things differently to how you used to.”

To celebrate the single release, we caught up with Make Friends to discover 5 tracks that influenced ‘When Nothing’s Said’.

Bombay Bicycle Club – Overdone | Listen via Spotify
A bold intro to their fourth album, octave pedals at full throttle, this arguably saw Bombay at their heaviest; the same can be said for us with ‘When Nothing’s Said’. The climax in ‘Overdone’ rattles around in your head, something we have hopefully managed to replicate. Bombay’s use of samples are nothing short of genius, and that’s territory we’d be keen to venture into in the future.

Foals – Miami | Listen via Spotify
Absolutely thumping drums chuck you neck-deep in this track then you have these twangy guitar riffs dancing over the top as you’re relentlessly battered by the bass. It packs a punch at a steady pace, and we aimed to get that same energy in the beat.

Jaws – Time | Listen via Spotify
Jaws have always served as a massive inspiration for us, getting heavy rotation on the soundtrack to our youths. Tonally, ’Time’ has it all, and its sensational groove makes it hard to listen to passively. We’re all about the toe-tappers.

Foster the People – Are You What You Want To Be? | Listen via Spotify
Those worldly beats that appear in the verse tend to crop up in our other tracks over ‘When Nothing’s Said’ but in terms of ‘feel’ we’ve tried to capture that irresistible ‘head-bopiness’. This track really comes alive in the chorus – dynamically it was a huge inspiration for us!

Cardigans – Lovefool | Listen via Spotify
This one’s a bit of a wild card, admittedly, but at it’s core, it has that undeniably funky bass coupled with a proper driving beat. There are similarities in terms of lyrical themes too, this paranoia that we’re sure everyone can attest to. Old, but gold!
