Marsicans | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Suburbs’

Amidst their UK tour supporting Fickle Friends, Marsicans have shared with us the influence behind their new single ‘Suburbs’.

Produced by Embrace’s Mickey Dale and mixed/mastered by Fernando Lodeiro (Paul McCartney, Vampire Weekend) and Joe LaPorta (David Bowie, Imagine Dragons), ‘Suburbs’ continues to champion the band’s harmony-laden infectious indie-pop sound that’s only growing stronger with each release.

Following their storming summer featuring multiple festival appearances across the UK, the band have joined Fickle Friends on their UK headline tour as main support.

We caught up with Marsicans to delve into the influence behind their latest single ‘Suburbs’.

Kings Of Leon – Back Down South
On this track, KOL bridge the gap between country and indie rock really well. We listened to this song a lot to see how four indie kids from Leeds could legitimately get away with leaning on a country influence.

First Aid Kit – It’s A Shame
Oli (Guitar) was listening to this album a lot when we were writing ‘Suburbs’. He got his hands on a slide one morning and it started off as a joke but it ended up sticking.

Volcano Choir – Comrade
Rob (Bass/Keys) is a huge fan of Justin Vernon, in particular, his use of lo-fi vocal samples. When we were in the studio we started to mess around with pitch shifting Oli’s vocals and that became the start of the middle 8.

Dolly Parton – Don’t Think Twice
We keep going back to country music whilst we’re in the van on tour and we were listening to this song a lot whilst recording ‘Suburbs’.

The Raconteurs- Salute Your Solution
There are some filthy guitar tones on this track. We had them in mind whilst recording the bridge for ‘Suburbs’.
