Megan Black | 5 tracks that influenced ‘MOTHER. SISTER. LOVER.’

Megan Black has released her new single ‘MOTHER. SISTER. LOVER’.

The empowering release aims to honour the experiences of female-identifying and non-binary individuals who have had to navigate the burden of society’s unrealistic standards and the pressure the patriarchal system has placed on women.

Speaking of the single, Megan said: “We’re taught from a very young age that women should compete with one another – you have to be prettier, smarter, funnier, more talented. I wanted to use this song to spread the message that we don’t need to fight against each other. The women in my life bring me more strength, wisdom, and love than I could ever begin to describe. There is so much power in us coming together.”

To celebrate the release of ‘MOTHER. SISTER. LOVER’, Megan shared with us 5 tracks that influenced the single.

Fiona Apple – Hot Knife | Listen via Spotify
This song holds a lot of power for me and inspired the vocal layering in ‘MOTHER. SISTER. LOVER.’ I wanted to showcase voices through this song and use them to create rhythms and build tension – this track was a massive influence on that idea. Plus, Fiona Apple is just very cool.

BrownBear – Unity | Listen via Spotify
I was lucky enough to hear this song before it was released as part of the album ‘Demons’. This track is all about bringing people together and is something that I aspire to do through my music. This song stands for something important and really gave me a lot of courage to put ‘MOTHER. SISTER. LOVER.’ out into the world. this song is in support of Black Lives Matter and I really suggest learning more here: https://blacklivesmatter.com

Kate Bush – This Woman’s Work | Listen via Spotify
‘MOTHER. SISTER. LOVER.’ was a way for me to find the power in vulnerability. This song has always made me feel powerful and vulnerable at the same time. It’s beautiful and really inspires me when creating art.

CMAT – I Wanna Be A Cowboy, Baby! | Listen via Spotify
I just love CMAT! Their music is fun, queer, and still talks about important things. As an artist, they’ve become a huge influence in what I do. And I really wanna be a cowboy someday so it keeps the dream alive!

Mhaol – Period Sex | Listen via Spotify
This band are unreal! The message they stand for and the way they go about making change through their music inspired me so much. ‘MOTHER. SISTER. LOVER.’ is not just for cis women – it’s inclusive and it’s about celebrating change and speaking up. Mhaol have become a huge inspiration for me after Snack Mag music editor, Andy Reilly, introduced me to them earlier this year. I love seeing people using their place to make change. One of their members said ‘we’re not all liberated, until we’re all liberated’, I agree with this message and always want to find ways to incorporate it into my message and into the art I make. Who doesn’t love a bit of ‘period sex’, really?
