Pete Moses, the man at the helm of Australian Pop fusion collective President Street, has had quite the busy year.

Having just released his new single ‘Need You Now’ and the accompanying music video featuring Kate Jenkinson (star of Channel Five’s ‘Wentworth’), he is now looking to the future, and with new music already in the pipeline things don’t seem to be slowing down…

To celebrate the release of ‘Need You Now’, Pete shared the five singles that helped shape and create this single.

Speaking of the single, Pete said: “‘Need You Now’ is a song where I really tried to explore that sense of absolute despair and isolation that comes when you’re blindsided by your lover’s sudden decision to end the relationship. I try to write every song in its own bubble so I can’t really think about 5 songs that influence this ‘Need You Now’, but more about the 5 songs that influence me and my songwriting in general.”

ACDC – You Shook Me All Night Long
This song is a staple where I grew up and it is a track that just grabbed me straight away the first time I heard it. I love the “no apologies” approach to this track and, of course, we can never forget our roots.

Prince – I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man
Whenever I hear this song it reminds me that some of the coolest songs ever written can be simple and I try to remind myself to not overcomplicate things. I love the vibe and energy of this song and to me it shows that a great harmony and the right guitar hook can go a long way!

Drake – Hotline Bling
I find this song so clever in its minimalism. I love those little keyboard stabs and love the fact that the keys are low in the mix – and those kicks are so huge!

Maxwell – Sumthin’ Sumthin’
This is a go-to song when I find myself in need of a lift – even though it’s not a particularly high energy track. I just find the baseline and percussion so mesmerising and it inspires me to get up and get in the studio every time I hear it. I just love the 90’s RnB vibes and effort they went to get that bass sound.

Kanye – All of the Lights
Breaking rules is what I reckon this song is all about. Lyrically genius and changing direction at will, I love this track. Plus, his commitment to great hooks is awesome. I just wish he was a bit less of a….
