Dutch singer-songwriter remme has released his second single ‘Hunger’.
Speaking of the single, Remme said: “For some reason, listening to -Hunger- always reminded me of driving. I remember how I did my driving test last year and started driving around a couple of times a week just to listen to the song on the drive. But the song is actually just about sex…”
‘Hunger’ encapsulates that momentum and passion into an upbeat singalong single.
To celebrate the single release, we caught up with Remme to discover 5 tracks that influenced ‘Hunger’.
James Bay – Let It Go | Listen via Spotify
The first idea for ‘Hunger’ was born a few years ago out of a guitar strum inspired by James Bay’s ‘Let It Go’, one of my favourite songs at the time. I don’t think you can still hear the James Bay influence that much because ‘Hunger’ has changed a lot over the years in terms of sound, but when I listen back to the very first iPhone recording I immediately hear it. I always find it very interesting to look back at my writing process and see the development of a song.
The War On Drugs – Holding On | Listen via Spotify
The War On Drugs is a band that I actually only discovered last year. Almost all of their songs have a very calm but strong vibe, ‘Holding On’ is one of those. The combination of drums and guitar was very important for ‘Hunger’.
Bruce Springsteen – Dancing In The Dark | Listen via Spotify
Bruce Springsteen is one of my favourite artists of all time. As a child, my parents used to play his music a lot around our house and lately I found myself listening to some of his albums again and again, especially ‘Born in the U.S.A.’ and ’Nebraska’. Same as ‘Holding On’ by The War On Drugs it’s really the vibe of this song that inspired me.
D’angelo – Cruisin’ | Listen via Spotify
One of the songs that inspired ‘Hunger’ lyric-wise is ‘Cruisin’ by one of my heroes (and guilty pleasures) D’angelo. Most of his songs are about sex and ‘Hunger’ is too, I think you can hear that very clearly in the chorus.
In the verses, you find yourself in some kind of happy dream situation that a lot of people, who are at the beginning of a relationship, may recognise. In the chorus, you wake up and everything comes together.
Niall Horan – No Judgement | Listen via Spotify
‘No Judgement’ was a very important reference track when finishing ‘Hunger’. ‘Hunger’ was already finished, but somewhere I felt that it sounded a little different than other music I listen to myself these days, it felt a bit too ‘old’ to me I think. We started listening carefully to recent songs by some of my favourite artists like The Weeknd, Shawn Mendes and Taylor Swift and we noticed that the difference was mainly in volumes and sound, not so much in the music itself. ‘No Judgement’ by Niall Horan was a really good reference.
