Sad Boys Club | 5 tracks that influenced ‘I’m Not Afraid of The Death (But I Am Afraid of The Dying)’

Sad Boys Club have released their new single ‘I’m Not Afraid of The Death (But I Am Afraid of The Dying)’.

Out now via Modern Sky, the 6-track EP is a theatrical alt-rock release.

To celebrate the EP release, Sad Boys Club shared with us 5 tracks that influencer the single.

Daniel Johnston – The Story Of An Artist | Listen via Spotify
In the past, we have written EPs in relatively short time-frames, meaning their themes and sounds have been at least vaguely succinct (lol!) by virtue of their shared time and place both physically and emotionally. This record was quite different, we weren’t expecting to release another EP until Covid upset our plans – these songs were pulled together drawing on lots of sketches and ideas stretching over a couple of years, it was a different sort of process and was the first time we were creating something that didn’t feel so much like a snapshot – it was sort of liberated from the shackles of time or something, floating curiously in a vacuum of transcendent ideas. Definitely very spiritual, extremely progressive, proper art. It invites you to take time to think about what you’re doing and why. I always loved this Daniel Johnston song, I first heard it at school, I wish I could remember who introduced it to me. When thinking about what you’re doing takes you down a less than friendly road, it serves as an excellent companion. I’m very grateful for it.

The Beatles – Across The Universe | Listen via Spotify
I always find myself referencing my own relationship with music within our songwriting. Over the years there’s been all sorts of references – Velvet Underground, Imogen Heap, LCD Soundsystem, Drop Nineteens, Counting Crows, there’s even a Spector ref at some point. It’s high-brow stuff. ‘Across The Universe’ gets a nod this time around – towards the end of recording the EP I really wasn’t listening to anyone else.

Little Feat – Willin’ | Listen via Spotify
This is what I force everyone to listen to when I’ve had too much to drink and am having too much of a good time.

The 1975 – If I Believe You | Listen via Spotify
A little while ago I got a message from Matty Healy saying he loved our band and asking if he could hear more. We sent him a soundcloud of new tracks including ‘The Void or Nothing’ from this EP – we were confident that the next thing we’d get back would be a record deal offer, or at least a tour support. I got smashed and started sending him quotes of his own songs and never got anything back. I took that personally. It’s served as motivation ever since. This song absolutely slaps, god bless The 1975.

Indigo De Souza – How I Get Myself Killed | Listen via Spotify
Obsessed with this girl, though I can’t say it actually had any knowing influence on the record. To be honest I didn’t really understand the question in the first place, so I just picked a handful of the first tracks I saw when I went on Spotify and then worked out what to write afterward, but I love everything about Indigo De Souza – songs are right in that sweet spot of devastating melancholy and infinite romance, I just really like it do I need to say anything more or can I just say that. It’s cracking stuff.
