Sam and Sounds | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Silly’

Sam and Sounds has released his new single ‘Silly’.

The new single from the Surrey singer-songwriter is a euphoric indie-pop release with a bop-along beat and playful lyrics that’ll lift you up and leave you singing along.

Speaking of the single, Sam said: “Releasing it in Lockdown 3, seems quite appropriate. Honestly this is just my overly dramatic artistic way of telling my girlfriend that I miss her and love her. I’m a bit wet – but I own it!!”

To celebrate his new single release, we caught up with Sam and Sounds – to discover the influence behind new single ‘Silly’.

Two Door Cinema Club – What You Know | Listen via Spotify
This song is one of my all-time favourites. I wrote ‘Silly’ when I was still trying to find my sound, and wanted to experiment with that indie/anthemic vibe and realised I absolutely loved it. Two Door Cinema Club’s soaring guitar riffs and feel good melodies were a massive influence on this song.

American Authors – Best Day of My Life | Listen via Spotify
This song is a huge nostalgia trip for me – it takes me back to playing FIFA 14 as a young teenager with no cares in the world apart from homework and how to drink too much beer at parties without my parents knowing the next day (I made a hash out of both, to be honest!). Personally, I think there are few better feelings than blasting out songs that have chanting melodies and singing your lungs out along with them. I originally imagined the instrumental riff in ‘Silly’ to be a vocal chant, which was inspired by the American Authors song, but in the end we felt the guitar fit better.

Smallpools – Dreaming | Listen via Spotify
This song literally taught me to love catchy hooks. I will never get enough of this song. In my opinion, it’s literally flawless. Huge inspiration, but actually not just for Silly, but for most of my writing.

Circa Waves – T-Shirt Weather | Listen via Spotify
Summery, feel-good bliss. That’s how I wanted Silly to sound.

Two Door Cinema Club – Undercover Martyn | Listen via Spotify
To be honest, I can’t get away from how much this band has influenced my writing and I’d just be lying if I dumbed it down at all. The guitar riffs and shimmery synths and just the general widely accepted fact that Two Door Cinema Club songs make you a better person all add up together to give me a feeling that I wanted to bring into my own music so I can 1, try and bring this type of music back, and 2, get to experience the feeling of playing this sort of music myself, live, and in front of a crowd (please, Lord, take COVID away quickly!!)
