Talk Time | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Year of Self’

Talk Time have unveiled their debut track ‘Year of Self’.

The indie pop quartet surfaced from a warehouse in the Lincoln Heights Neighbourhood of Los Angeles with catchy experimental pop singles.

‘Year of Self’ is the first single taken from the band’s forthcoming five-track EP, engineered and co-produced by Math Bishop (Two Door Cinema Club, The Killers).

To celebrate the band’s debut release, we caught up with Talk Time as they shared five singles that influenced ‘Year of Self’.

Super Rich Kids – Frank Ocean

To me, the characters and scenes painted throughout this whole record were so vivid, and vividly L.A. Also the chaos and confusion wasn’t expressed just in angst, but also in thoughtful self-reflection. This track goes from youth delinquency in the suburbs to “searching for a real love”, seamlessly and with such soul. Brilliant!

Bon Iver – 22 (Over Soon)

This is simply mesmerising and gorgeous. Justin Vernon impeccably makes music that is so distinctly of its own genre – groundbreaking, new, refreshing and so far and away from anyone else. We have our influences, but Talk Time hopes to create something that is distinctly its own sound.

Tycho – Horizon

Ambient and relaxing but danceable, Tycho’s tight niche of indie-rock-meets-electronic is a big influence for our drummer Andrew. ‘Horizon’ eases you into a place that feels angelic, filled with many layers, but it also grooves enough to make sure you know it’s not made for background music.

Whitney – No Woman

Sad, slow, seductive and somber, yet it radiates with a warmth. The whole Whitney record on Secretly Canadian really impressed us. These guys know how to write songs that put you in a certain mood!

The Radio Dept. – Committed to the Cause

A continuous eb and flow of build up and break down – clingy hi-hats, pumping funkadelic bass & joyfully energetic piano riffs all stack onto one another and eventually find a place beneath a driving lead synth line and calm but enigmatic vocals.
