Talking About Ray | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Three Fifteen’

Talking About Ray have released their new single ‘Three Fifteen’.

The track is about reminiscing childhood friends who’ve taken different paths in life and carries a nostalgic, bittersweet tone, capturing memories of shared innocence growing up in a small town together.

To celebrate their single release, Talking About Ray share with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘Three Fifteen’.

Blink 182 – All The Small Things
Reece: I Love it because it’s high energy and the drum beat keeps the song moving throughout the verses, plus it’s a classic singalong.

Beartooth – Hated
Reece: Love the switch to the half time breakdown in the song and it’s always a tension builder when gearing up to them playing it live.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers – Around The World
Ronan: I enjoy the sporadic bursts of energy this song takes that’s somewhat unconventional, a full throttle intro delivered from Flea going into a more relaxed verse and chorus, paired with johns guitar playing on this record the song seems more centred on the bass playing which is something that isn’t often seen. I’ve tried to somewhat replicate this concept with us being a 3 piece band, it left us with a need to fill the sonic space we had as well as keeping something that was melodic and served the song.

Fast Animals and Slow Kids – A Cosa Ci Serve
Ronan: Slightly off the beaten track here. I find this song to be really inspiring, it’s an excellent example of how you can create a song to be a flowing composed piece the same way you would see in classical music. I find it comparable to Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ the song doesn’t just have a set structure of verse, chorus, it has acts that depict different parts of a story and is a real musical journey, particularly when listened to as a whole in the album ‘Hybris’. The influence I took was a reminder of how interesting a piece of music can be, without being over the top complex. Lastly, I think me listening to it and taking so much is a testament on musics ability to trump the language barrier, with the song being written in Italian I have no understanding of the meaning behind the words said, however I can understand the passion and emotive intent behind it all when paired with the wonderful instrumentation.

Placebo – 36 Degree
Saz: This inspires me because its raw emotion and introspective lyrics resonate with the listener and I try to be relatable in my song writing. This track reminds me to confront vulnerability and embrace individuality. The song’s haunting energy and poetic honesty remind me of the strength in expressing even the most complex feelings. I love Brian’s guitar tone and his style of playing in this track, that’s something that’s definitely influenced my playing over the years.
