THE MEZZ | 5 tracks that influenced ‘The Mezz EP’

THE MEZZ have released their new EP ‘The Mezz EP’.

Speaking of the EP, the band said: “Our brand new ep is our proudest work to date. We learnt to self produce most of the tracks which allowed us to push our sound to new heights with no time limit. Working with a concept is a big part of The Mezz. Following our debut ep “avoid the panic” which was about being stuck in a post lockdown world with no idea what to do with life due to lack of opportunities. This new saga dives into self worth and love as the concept. Being yourself and following a dream is really all we are doing anyway, so why not pour that emotion into a record.”

To celebrate their EP release, the band shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘THE MEZZ’ EP.

Bruce Springsteen – Born To Run
Our band’s strong point is our live shows! The energy we portray on stage never matches up with our songs. This EP we really wanted to capture our performances within the recording and no one does that better than Springsteen. ‘Born To Run’ is a classic example of this. It’s so atmospheric and massive but it still just sounds like a band jamming together, that’s how we wanted this EP to sound.

Oasis – Half The World Away
This song was a massive inspiration to the final track on the EP ‘George street’. Ever since I was 17, I loved the idea of writing a song like this. Noel Gallagher is a master at writing a song that is plain and simply a good song. It doesn’t need anything added or anything to stand out. Everything in it is there for a reason and it works whether you’re round a campfire or in a stadium.

Lionel Richie – Dancing On The Ceiling
I have always been a big fan of 80’s pop music and for this EP we really wanted to push our sound further than ever before. In the first track, we lean heavily into the 80’s synth wave style that was definitely inspired by songs like this.

Wunderhorse – Teal
Wunderhorse are one of the best bands to come out in about 20 years. Jacob Slater’s ability to write songs in a style that is so down to earth and straight to the point really inspires me as a lot of my writing styles are the same. I always write from real life experiences and tell the story as it happened. Sometimes you just want to hear an artist say something like it is instead of hiding behind metaphors.

Metallica – Hit the lights
Now this may sound very strange at first so let me explain! Before forming The Mezz, we were all big metal fans growing up and played in metal bands throughout our teenage years. I think this is why even though we play indie pop rock now, we still deliver the songs with such energy and power. When you learn to play an instrument that way you never unlearn it and it becomes part of the bands identity.
