Tom Lumley & The Brave Liaison | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Sign of the Times’

Tom Lumley and The Brave Liaison have released their new EP ‘Sign of the Times’.

The EP is a powerful introduction to the band, presenting 4 addictive tracks which take you on a musical journey through their rock blends, presenting Tom Lumley & The Brave Liason’s sound to the world.

Speaking of the EP, the band said: “Each song on this EP centres around the mental health issues that many of us face on a day to day basis. By writing and releasing this body of work, we hope to strengthen the ideology in people’s minds that it’s okay to talk about what they’re going through. Social media can put copious amounts of pressure on people, as we chase an impossible ideal of someone else’s highlight reel. The breakdown of relationships that come from us spending too much time glued to our phones and not enough time connecting on a human, personal level are regrettably the signs of our times.”

To celebrate the EP release, the band shared with us 5 tracks that influenced the EP.

The Amazons – In My Mind | Listen via Spotify
The Amazons are a band that massively influence our writing. Quite often you’ll get the sense that some of their songs are based around a riff, as if the guitar riff came first and they wrote a song around that riff. That’s a similarity with our writing, and it’s often how our songs come to life. From a riff or a guitar part which we all really like so we expand on that and turn it into a song. We could have picked any of their songs but went with ‘In My Mind’ simply because it’s got a huge rock sound and a killer riff!

Yonaka – Ignorance | Listen via Spotify
This Yonaka track has that thrilling aggression that excites people and that’s something we wanted to create in our tracks. I’d say we’ve also spent a lot of time listening to the guitar work in Yonaka tracks which shows in the EP. Their lead lines are brilliant and really stand out in their songs.

Foals – Spanish Sahara | Listen via Spotify
Foals’ song-writing is second to none. They write immensely clever music and the time and effort they put into their songs clearly shows. Despite loving their more upbeat stuff, ‘Spanish Sahara’ in particular had a big influence on us when writing ‘Let Go’. We wanted a song that stood out from the rest for being more mellow, but structurally we wanted to surprise listens with an ending they wouldn’t see coming. Our song ‘Let Go’ definitely starts out Foals-esque but we finish it in true form, with powerful rock energy.

Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes – Crowbar | Listen via Spotify
This track has the energy and the forward momentum in the rhythm that we aimed for with the songs on the EP. It’s also very riffy, and once you’ve heard our EP you’ll know we like our riffs! There’s an aggression in the vocal delivery that we pushed to get in our songs.

Nothing But Thieves – Amsterdam | Listen via Spotify
This song also has a driving, forward momentum to it. Delivered with a very tight, forceful modern rock sound. This band influence us in every part of our writing and production. We love the structure, the dynamics, the guitar sounds and the vocal delivery of their songs.
