Urban Architects | 5 tracks that influenced ‘The Dream Spectre’

Urban Architects have recently released their debut single ‘The Dream Spectre’.

The Liverpudlian indie-rockers recorded their debut single live at Chapel Studios with Producer Joe Sage.

Speaking of the influence behind the single, the band explained: “As a band, we always seem to be on the same page when we’re writing and recording in the studio. It’s why we think it worked so well that we tracked the song live, recording all together at the same time. We’ve got four very unique sets of influences but we feel we’ve drawn them together and we can’t wait for everyone to hear our debut single.”

To celebrate the release, we caught up with the band to discover the influence behind their debut release.

The Strokes – Meet Me In The Bathroom | Listen via Spotify
At the time of writing Dream Spectre, I [Harry, vocals & guitar] was listening to a lot of The Strokes, so ‘Meet Me In The Bathroom’, from their second record ‘Room on Fire’, had a huge part to play. There are many others too but I think this tune really set the tone.

Arctic Monkeys – The View From The Afternoon | Listen via Spotify
I’ve seen Arctic Monkeys live a couple of times, and I’ve seen the contagious effect ‘The View From The Afternoon’ has on crowds and it’s this feeling that we wanted to bring to ‘The Dream Spectre’. The Arctic Monkeys do an amazing job of translating the energy of their performances into their studio recordings and we wanted to do just that…we even recorded at the same studio they recorded their debut record!

The Brummies – Going Crazy | Listen via Spotify
The lead guitar lines on the record were heavily influenced by ‘Eternal Reach’ from The Brummies. But if I [Dan, lead guitar] had to choose one song, in particular, it would have to be ‘Going Crazy’. It contains a lot of note bending and smooth melodic passages, which is similar to how I style my playing.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers – On Mercury | Listen via Spotify
The bass part in ‘Dream Spectre’ draws heavily from ‘On Mercury’ by The Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Flea uses a lot of octaving in his bass lines and adds little passing notes throughout, which I [Obe, bass] felt would work really well on Dream Spectre.

The Stone Roses – I Am The Resurrection | Listen via Spotify
The drums in ‘I Am The Resurrection’ by The Stone Roses have a very pacy and powerful punch to them. We wanted that feeling to be carried throughout in ‘The Dream Spectre’ to make it sound like the fast-paced records of the early nineties that I [Aidan, drums] really look up to.
