Interview | Otherkin

It’s been an exhilarant start to the year for Dubliners Otherkin.

Launching into the year with a UK tour, supporting Amazons and with their own headline shows, the band is currently on a short stint of headline shows across the UK.

This week also marks a momentous occasion for the band who will open for Guns N’ Roses at Slane Castle in front of 80,000 people.

Achieving this iconic slot without a debut album release is an incredible achievement, so what is the secret behind Otherkin success?

Ahead of the landmark show, we caught up with the band during their UK tour to find out more.

For those who have yet to hear your tracks, how would you describe your music?

Loud and fast garage rock.

Which top three bands do you take influence from at the moment?

Iggy Pop, The Clash, QOTSA.

You’ve been working away in the studio on your debut album, can you give us any hints about the release?

We feel like it’s a step up, the whole album is very energetic and live. We think it’s gonna excite people and it’ll be out sometime later this year, that’s all we can say right now.

You’re currently on your UK tour, what can we expect from your live headline shows?

We couldn’t wait to get back to the UK, as per usual it’s gonna be a sweaty rock n roll show. We’re gonna make sure the audience has as much fun and gets as gritty as ourselves.

As festival season gets underway, you will support Guns N’ Roses, how did it feel when you found out you’d landed the slot?

It’s a pretty surreal thing to get to support one of the biggest rock bands in the world, especially as we’re only starting our career. It’s a huge honour, they’re guys we’ve looked up to since a young age.

What is the thing your most looking forward to about stepping onto the stage at Slane Castle?

It’s the most iconic venue in Ireland, and possibly one of the most iconic venues in the world. Many artists have done live DVDs there, it’s a pretty amazing feeling to be part of that long line of rock’n’roll bands who have graced the stage. Having the opportunity to play to a pretty huge crowd of people who will most likely not have heard of us before is pretty exciting, we love the challenge of winning over a new crowd.

Do you have any plans for further UK dates this summer?

We’re gonna be playing Download, Victorious Festival and a few others which we’re really excited about! You can find all the dates on our website.

What are your band aims for 2017?

Our aim is to get our debut album out to as many ears as possible, and to play as many shows as possible. We want to bring this album all around the world, we’ve a firm eye on America and Asia for touring destinations once the European cycle is done.

Is there anything else you wish to add?

Skate Fast, Eat Ass. Listen 2 Otherkin.
