Lola and The Kickstarts; The Handmade Tale of Lola and the Kickstarts

The Handmade Tale of Lola and the Kickstarts is the debut record from Leicester’s Lola & the Kickstarts.

Formed by singer songwriter Lola King and guitarist brother Dan later to be joined by Shaun Lee on drums and Chris Curtis on bass. The band is now based in London where their melodic indie pop style has picked up a great fan base.

Lola King’s vocal style is very eloquent, a rather intriguing style that can be compared to the likes of Kate Nash and Mike Skinner. The impressive thing from hearing Lola is her London twang which comes as a surprise as she is from Leicester.

You’re doin alright kid are the lyrics that stand out on track one The Great Divide, the flow from Lola’s’ vocals and song writing is exceptional. The backing of the band with the changes of guitar style is all kept together with a sensitive bass pattern. Lola and the Kickstarts provide some attitude to the music world; these guys are able to back it up with their musical talent and Lola occasionally reminds me of Lily Allen with flow.

Bounce together is that song that will be that track to be remembered. A chorus that can get everyone to bounce and sing along too, this is an uplifting song that would even get Scrooge to raise his hands in the air and possibly bounce.

I left my heart in England comes in at track five and musically this is gentle, it feels rather an emotional track. A darker feel with Interlude in f sharp stands at only just over a minute, but with distorting vocals left a mark on this mind of mine.

Loose lips Sally heard it all before you’re a slack jawed Annie, words spoken by Lola King in Heard it all before, names I haven’t heard for some time. Lola King’s song writing abilities are beautiful and can be dark with a good twist in it. The backup from Dan King, Chris Curtis and Shaun Lee make the music ready to become stronger.

Howl For me baby has the addition of the harmonica sound. A nice mellow tune with a nice drum beat from Shaun Lee mixed strongly that is sending out a message that may be sensitive to some ears.

Lola definitely has more talent in her vocal skills that is ready to come out and push their boundaries, especially being surrounded by the band. With each other they will grow with maturity.

Get on board and feel the light of something strong that is approaching and Kickstart the Lola express.
