Alex Jayne | 5 tracks that influenced ‘The Blue’

Alex Jayne has released her debut EP ‘The Blue’.

Created in collaboration with Duncan Pym (Mysie, Kahlla, Litany), ‘The Blue’ marks a change from her previous music as it ponders the future, looking on how it evades us, eludes us and our obsession with it.

Speaking about the EP, Jayne said: “I wrote this EP in lockdown. These songs came from the quiet. From the space between life at 100mph to sudden stillness. I found myself future-gazing in isolation. I was thinking about how we project ourselves into the future. There’s this pressure to figure it out, to stick to the plan, to find the fairytale. These songs were my way of saying ‘it’s actually okay to be wandering, to be a bit lost and find something in the quiet’”.

To celebrate the EP release, Alex shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘The Blue’.

Kate Bush – Deeper Understanding | Listen via Spotify
Kate Bush is my heroine. I was listening to ‘The Sensual World’ around the time I made the EP. The production on ‘Deeper Understanding’ feels super intimate – her vocals are almost whispers. I love that.

Alanis Morissette – All I Really Want | Listen via Spotify
One of my favourite album openers! I’ve learned a lot from how free Alanis is in her writing. Her lyrics always hit hard, she doesn’t hold back.

Lana Del Rey – Ride | Listen via Spotify
Listening to ‘Ride’ makes me feel super nostalgic. I’m inspired by Lana and how she draws you into her universe. I reach for that escapism whilst making my music.

Radiohead – Burn The Witch | Listen via Spotify
My producer, Duncan shared this song when we were making ‘The Blue’. There’s so much tension in the way it builds with the different textures and rhythms (also the music video is amazing!)

Airiel – Molten Young Lovers | Listen via Spotify
Big fan of Airiel – they’re reverb heaven! I love the soaring synths in this song against those guitars. That sense of atmosphere was something we wanted to create with The Blue EP – especially ‘Hollywood’ the opening track.
