Carrie Baxter has released her new EP ‘What Now’.
The new EP from the Irish-born, London-based soul singer sees the singer introduce a more playful side to her music in comparison to previous releases.
Speaking of the EP, Carrie Baxter said: “This EP was very much a collaboration project with my close friend and producer, GRAMM. We started making this music when we met together in uni. At the time we were very into Mac Ayres, The Internet and Tom Misch so an intimate bedroom feel was super important for us. Narratively, this project is very different for me in comparison to ‘Placebo’. Placebo was very much written in the first person and was quite a cathartic experience whereas ‘What Now’ is much more collaborative and some of the songs on there are not about my life, per se; I’ve drawn on a lot of my own lived experience but also people’s lives around me. The ‘outro’ for me is one of my favourite bits as it’s a nod to my home city of Waterford and our gorgeous, albeit very strong accent!”
To celebrate her EP release, Carrie shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘What Now’.
Mac Ayres – Where You Goin Tonight | Listen via Spotify
My guitarist GRAMM was the one who first showed me Mac Ayres and he became a firm favourite and reference of ours during the making of this project. The simple yet infectious melodies and constant groove on all of his tracks really played a crucial role in how I approached my EP.
Freudian – Best Part | Listen via Spotify
This was the track ‘You’ was based on. My friend was going through a long-distance relationship at the time and he told me a story about how much they both love this song and so I wrote ‘You’ as an ode to their love – she really loved the song so I guess I did good eh?!
The Internet – Dontcha | Listen via Spotify
One of my favourite songs of all time. I’m a huge internet fan and I’m not even sure where to start on how they influenced my EP. One thing I definitely did was base the ‘Something In The Water’ video idea around a similar theme as the ‘Dontcha’ video, I love the simplicity and space of it.
Tom Misch – Lost in Paris | Listen via Spotify
I co-wrote the entire ‘What Now’ project with my dear friend GRAMM who produced the project but who is also a guitarist – there is no way we could not draw inspiration from Tom Misch grooves, we wanted the whole project to feel homely, comfortable and down to earth – not too far off the feel of this song.
Joesef – Limbo | Listen via Spotify
I’ve recently been converted to Joesef superfan club. I LOVE the drums in this song. I wouldn’t say it overly influenced the project but I did draw inspiration from him as an artist, I love how the sound matches his image and visuals, everything about him feels so authentic and natural. I built a whole new output and visual experience for the ‘What Now’ project so I hope it connects on the same level as Joesef.
