Cheriton | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Parallel’

CHERITON has released his new EP ‘Parallel’.

The new EP from the Kent songwriter brings his indie-pop sound to the surface.

Made up of three original tracks and two live versions, the EP was produced alongside friend and long-term collaborator Andy Hall Hall (Bastille, Fickle Friends, James Gillespie).

To celebrate his EP release, we caught up with CHERITON to discover 5 tracks that influenced ‘Parallel’.

Kelis – Millionaire | Listen via Spotify
The drum machine on this track has been a constant reference whilst making the EP, Love how it drives the song and such a constant presence. That bounce throughout the track was something we tried to replicate in ‘Parallel’.

Francis & The Lights – Friends | Listen via Spotify
I love the space in this record, such great lyrics and vocal performance. I wanted to try and sound BIG in quiet moments which you can hear in parts in ‘Wish You The Best’. I love the way some of the lyrics are seemingly thrown away, like an everyday conversation “Heard you bought some land in Mexico And I said, “Way to go, man”

Smokey Robinson – oh baby baby | Listen via Spotify
I’ve always loved Smokey singing about being sad 😢 Big fan of sad lyrics! It’s something I’ve always explored in my songwriting. The juxtaposition of uplifting music with sad lyrics is quite common throughout music history.. but no-one does it better than Mr Robinson! He even sounds like he’s in tears whilst performing!! The harmonies in the chorus give you the feels, love him 🐋

Tyler the Creator – EarfQuake | Listen via Spotify
Such a bop! I love the songwriting and instrumentation again. He also has such great vocal delivery on this, feels very sincere and tender. I need to feel this in my lyrics/performance and Tyler was a massive inspiration in exploring different ways to achieve this on record.

Joji – Slowdancing in the dark | Listen via Spotify
Love the instrumentation and lyrics of this track. The synth swells give such a classic feel to this song along with the melody. I love the classic approach to songwriting & arrangement, Joji manages to give the classic arrangements a contemporary feel.. the holy grail for me 🙏
