Chloe Roze | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Hypocrite’

Chloe Roze has released her new single ‘Hypocrite’.

The new track from the 21-year-old musician from Edinburgh is an intricate single that showcases the singer’s vulnerability with her emotional lyrics taking the forefront and centre. It’s a hauntingly emotive release that lays her feelings bare in a captivatingly beautiful single.

Speaking of her new single, Chloe said: “‘Hypocrite’ is my most transparent songwriting to date, with crude and upfront, emotional lyrics that explore themes of isolation, self-doubt and self-esteem: I wrote a song about wishing I could take my own advice. The single displays isolated vocals and intricate songwriting, in an intimate and powerful bedroom-pop ballad.”

To celebrate her single release, Chloe shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘Hypocrite’.

Maisie Peters – Hollow | Listen via Spotify
The first time I listened to ‘Hollow’ by Maisie Peters I felt her heartache. The honesty in her lyricism was admirable and something I never thought I would ever achieve. As someone who always used romanticized images in my writing, hearing a track that was so direct about the artist’s feelings was inspirational. When creating ‘Hypocrite’ I knew I wanted to create the same impact on my listeners that Maisie had on me with this tune.

Peach PRC – Heavy | Listen via Spotify
During the time I wrote ‘Hypocrite’, I was listening to a lot of Peach PRC. I discovered her through TikTok and instantly adored the music she created and her overall vibe. I loved her versatility as an artist, she refuses to conform to one style, and I applaud that. ‘Heavy’ was my go-to song when I was feeling down for a while, although the song didn’t intentionally inspire ‘Hypocrite’, ‘Heavy’ was influential on my overall artistic vision.

AKELA – Omen | Listen via Spotify
I was lucky enough to work with the creator directly as AKELA produced my track. I remember the first time hearing this song as a demo and falling in love with the artist’s storytelling, AKELA invites the listener to his arena, sharing his stories and creating a unique intimacy with his voice. His production and use of harmonies on ‘Omen’ highlight his personal experience without deterring from the soft delicate vocal, I knew this was something I wanted to try out for my own music.

Joni Mitchel – Free | Listen via Spotify
Joni is an artist that embodies everything I enjoy about music, similarly to the other artists I have mentioned, she knows exactly how to grasp the listener’s attention. With ‘For Free’ I tend to find myself doting on every lyric, waiting to hear the next part of the story, despite having listened to the song many times. With ‘Hypocrite’, I wanted to take the listeners on a similar journey.

Dodie – When | Listen via Spotify
‘When’ is a beautiful magnification into Dodie’s personal life, with strong lyrics and gorgeous vocals. This song prompts so many emotions every time I listen, I hear her pain through her impressive vocal stylings. As a vocalist myself Dodie’s voice inspires my own singing.
