Cold Years | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Paradise’

Cold Years have released their debut album ‘Paradise’.

The highly anticipated 13-track album release sounds set to become the soundtrack for a generation frustrated by the current climate, an album that’s lyrically become more relevant than ever in these trying times.

Speaking of the album, frontman Ross Gordon said: “There’s an ongoing narrative about how fucked everything is at the moment. It links everything, really, not just purely politics: It’s linked to the economy, to drugs and alcohol, and what our generation is going through right now. You work hard in school, you train for your career and you try to succeed at it, but the reality is that none of it really fucking matters. It’s a record that’s angry because, as a generation, we feel like we’ve been sold short.”

To celebrate their album release, we caught up with Ross to uncover 5 tracks that influenced ‘Paradise’.

Dave Hause – Saboteurs | Listen via Spotify
I love this song! It’s just a complete anthem for burning down the system, and that love will survive through all the shit that’s going on right now. That’s how I interpret it anyway! It’s so beautiful. And it just speaks volumes: listening to Dave play this night after night on tour burned into my head and definitely influenced this record.

The Bouncing Souls – Lean On Sheena | Listen via Spotify
A song about overcoming domestic abuse and a friend that will never leave your side. It’s heartbreaking but absolutely insane. It’s also got one of the best vocal melodies of all time. I love the gold record, I love this band, and I love what they stand for.

The Interrupters – Gave You Everything | Listen via Spotify
AIMEE INTERRUPTER IS A QUEEN. A song about a breakup, and is a massive fuck you to a manipulative partner. It definitely inspired me a lot, and I felt like it was 100% applicable to my own life.

Green Day – Westbound Sign | Listen via Spotify
Probably one of my favourite songs of all time. About someone travelling across a whole country to be happy with someone. It’s full of defiance and grit and is an anthem to my youth. I find it lyrically more relevant than ever.

The Menzingers – Your Wild Years | Listen via Spotify
This song is beautiful. The lyrics are so gut-wrenching. Drinking, missing someone, building a life together, memories – it has everything. It’s a beautiful vision of someone else’s life and it grips you from start to finish. The lyrics in the chorus are SO cool.
