Emzae | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Waste Our Time’

Emzae has released her new single ‘Waste Our Time’.

The new track from the electronic pop singer-songwriter and producer combines electro-pop hooks with pristine production.

Written to a landscape of dating apps and friends getting married and starting families, the relatable release argues that it’s better to be alone than in a superficial relationship.

To celebrate the single release, we caught up with Emzae to uncover 5 tracks that influenced the release.

Sneaker Pimps – 6 Underground | Listen via Spotify
I’ve been inspired a lot by trip-hop during the making of my upcoming album, and this track is one of my favourites. It has that dark, 90s feel to it and I love the lo-fi bit-crushed drums.

Timbaland Feat. Keri Hilson – Miscommunication| Listen via Spotify
I had been watching an episode of Pensado’s Place where the guest was Marcella Araica who is a sound engineer that’s worked with various people including Timbaland, who is one of my favourite ever producers. I had only really listened to the singles off ‘Shock Value’ when I was younger, but when they mentioned how amazing Keri Hilson’s vocals were on this track, I went back to have a listen and wondered why I’d never noticed the song before. It’s now one of my favourite Timabland productions.

Britney Spears – Why Should I Be Sad?| Listen via Spotify
‘Blackout’ was one of the best pop albums of the 2000s in my opinion, and you can hear that I’ve been inspired a little bit by some of the synths in this song and also some of the spoken parts. I also think it’s one of Britney’s most genuinely personal tracks, and Pharrell did an awesome job on it.

Kelela – LMK| Listen via Spotify
Kelela is one of my favourite RnB artists. She always brings something new and unique to the table and everything still manages to be super catchy. I also absolutely love the video for this track, which has inspired me in many ways aesthetically.

Rihanna Feat. SZA – Consideration | Listen via Spotify
My favourite track of Rihanna’s album ‘Anti’, I love the sparse production and, once again, the lo-fi drums.
