Hurtling | 5 tracks that influenced ‘Future From Here’

Hurtling have released their debut album ‘Future From Here’.

Self-produced album and recorded at One Cat Studios in Brixton, the alt-rock trio’s new album is out now via Onomatopoeia.

Written by frontwoman Jen Macro as an “exploration of loss and hope”, the album was written in downtime on tour with My Bloody Valentine.

To discover more about the influence behind the album release, we caught up with Jen to discover 5 tracks that influenced ‘Future From Here’.

Shannon Wright – Violent Colours | Listen
I saw Shannon Wright at an ATP Festival a few years back and her performance stuck with me. The albums ‘Secret Blood’ and ‘In Film Sound’ were definitely inspirational for our album’s more discomforting tracks like ‘Feel It’ and ‘E Flat One’. The rawness and honesty of the sound of her albums was something that really interested me and, as a band, we decided early on that we wanted ‘Future From Here’ to sound as live as possible, with minimal overdubs.

Kaki King – Falling Day | Listen
I came across Kaki King via her TED talk, I was fascinated by her virtuosic use of the instrument and how she experiments with sections and time signatures, without losing the thread of the melody and keeping the songs interesting. King inspired me to explore the fretboard a bit more when I was writing, finding different voicing for chords, and playing around with timing, we sometimes joke in rehearsals that we’re trying to chase the first beat of the bar around the room.

The Amps – I Am Decided | Listen
It’s no secret that I am huge fan of Kim Deal, I was lucky enough to watch The Breeders from the side of the stage at Primavera in Porto, an experience I’ll cherish forever. I was late to the party with The Amps, but had ‘Pacer’ on a loop when I was on tour in America. I think the relaxed joy in their music was something I wanted to do more of with the songs that became Hurtling songs, as in the past I’d always found melancholy an easier place to work from, and I wanted to try to change that.

Marika Hackman – Animal Fear | Listen
I really admire Hackman’s ability to conjure up pictures and scenarios in her lyrics, there’s a universal, observational quality to them but nearly always with a slightly new take on things, like looking at something you pass by every day, but with fresh eyes. Hard to choose one song, but I’ve gone with ‘Animal Fear’ as it is the first one I heard.

Sleater Kinney – Jumpers | Listen
After being asked to write about five songs that inspired ‘Future From Here’, I panicked. I mean where to start? I’m quite old…ahem…I mean experienced, and the collection of songs on the album are a culmination of years of learning and inspiration, so to pin down five was tricky, however I did come across a playlist that was entitled ‘Feel It/E Flat One’, which I think I put together as a kind of ‘mood board’ for mixing those tracks, and at least three of the five artists mentioned here were on it, so that gave me a start. I think for this track it’s the punchy directness of David Fridman’s production that I was trying to get across to Jon (Clayton) who mixed all the songs on ‘Future From Here’, but to be fair, I think Jon was already on the same page, and we didn’t even look at the playlist.
