Interlaker have released their debut self-titled album.
Speaking of the album, the band explained their new release was written and recorded entirely online.
Jack Wrench said: “We both approached recording the album with a zero-pressure attitude. We were both just up for writing music again.
“Dave’s voice and songwriting craft will always retain an identity, so we can push the music in any direction. The biggest kick I got out of the recording process was presenting Dave with a musical backdrop where I was like, ‘I have no idea where he will go with this’. I’ve never heard Dave singing that blend before.”
With Dave adding: “I tend to over-analyse everything, but it seemed to work out alright. I’m a bit fixated on my vocals.”
To celebrate their album release, Jack and Dave shared with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘Interlaker’.
Jacks’ tracks:
REM – Sitting Still
I don’t have many guitar idols, but I’ve always admired Peter Buck’s style. His parts are simple, yet his rhythms are infectious, and his melodies stick with you. Peter’s approach has been a huge influence on me as a guitarist (if I can even call myself one). I think ‘Murmur’ shaped my approach to songwriting, whether I knew it or not, when we were working on the Interlaker record.
Michael Kiwanuka – Final Days
I was spinning this record a lot during the writing of Interlaker. While I don’t think the songs directly inspired ours, the album definitely helped me tap into a creative headspace. It’s like a dream, pulling you into a different world, and I tried to capture that feeling as much as I could.
The Mars Volta – Cygnus… Vismund Cygnus
I’ve always loved the technical side of rock and progressive music. I think that shows up in my drumming style, and I couldn’t resist weaving it into the writing process for this record. I love a rhythm that twists and turns while keeping listeners engaged. A few tracks on Interlaker play with this theme—like ‘Spite of Day’ and The Mars Volta has definitely fuelled that passion for rhythm. If you don’t have it in you to listen to all 13 mins, skip to the 7 minute mark for a good taste of what I mean.
Dave’s tracks:
Bruce Springsteen – American Skin (41 Shots)
During the year of writing the album, I had Bruce Springsteen’s ‘High Hopes’ album on repeat in the car I was driving around London in – taking my daughter places and picking her up. Not particularly because of how amazing it is, but the radio didn’t work in the car and I kept forgetting to bring another CD to change it up. Listened to it a crazy amount of times and I think my daughter probably knows all the words from start to finish. Maybe the only album I was actually listening to in that time of writing the Interlaker record.
John Robert Matz – Main Theme (Tchia)
I’m a big gamer, so I’m always picking up on cool bits of music in the games I’m playing. I’d occasionally record a clip of something that I liked and send it over to Jack to have a listen to. The main song from a game called Tchia is lovely. Heard some cool, dark stuff from playing Assasin’s Creed Valhalla last year, too.
