Kyle Falconer has released his debut solo album ‘No Thank You’.
Out now via Riverman Records, the album is an honest, poignant release that details his struggles with addiction, therapy and becoming a father.
Recorded at Paul Weller’s Black Barn Studios last summer, Falconer recorded all of the instrumentation except for drums and also wrote the orchestral melodies which were completed in collaboration with the Rogue Orchestra.
To celebrate the release of the album, Kyle shared with his five singles that shaped the release.
The Beatles – When I’m Sixty Four
Originally, I wanted the whole album to sound like Paul McCartney’s granny songs, I’ve always had an obsession with them – ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer’, ‘Obla Di Obla Da’ etc. As I started the record it kind of went on a tangent, but that style is where I started with it.
Paul Carrack/The Eagles – Love Will Keep Us Alive
This was my go-to karaoke song when I was younger. It’s very cheesy but it always got the women greeting. I originally heard it on the ‘Hell Freezes Over’ Eagles Concert, but then found out it was originally Paul Carrack’s song and Mike and The Mechanics are one of my favourite bands. That’s the same vein as one of my songs on the album, ‘Last Bus Home’. It was written in LA and I thought it was the right thing to do to as I was in Eagles terrority.
Squeeze – Pulling Muscles From A Shell
Lyrically I always find Squeeze quite intriguing, they are humorous but still serious and I used to always imagine a dingy beauty in their writing, the greatest oxymoron ever! I feel like they were confused when they wrote and I feel like that too when I write, but it comes out in miraculous ways!
Crowded House – Fall At Your Feet
Crowded house have always been my favourite lyricists after The Beatles. I was almost scared of their lyrics when I was younger, it took me to dark places but I came out the other end with a deeper understanding and that’s how I feel about my album. I had to go there to come back, better than ever.
Fleetwood Mac – Go Your Own Way
Fleetwood Mac are game changers for me, I love the contrast in the vocals with their harmonies and I think I subliminally Mac up every song I do haha!
