Marcus has released his new EP ‘Not Real’.
The new 5-track EP from the Dublin-based artist sees Marcus unleash his new distinct sound taking influence from the mix of genres that surrounded him growing up.
Speaking about the EP, he said: “This EP has been a long time in the making. It includes some songs that I wrote years ago and some that I wrote over the last couple of months. When I listen to it I can hear my story and it means a lot to me. The last year presented a lot of challenges, there were long periods when I couldn’t get into a studio because of lockdowns. Because of this parts of the EP were recorded in my bedroom and parts in really good studios, it’s a funny mix. It has always been an ambition of mine to release a project and I’m really proud to finally put one out there. I’m so grateful to everybody who helped make this a reality.”
To celebrate the EP, Marcus shared with us 5 tracks that influenced the release.
Lethal Dialect – Keep it Real | Listen on Spotify
I remember hearing this for the first time like it was yesterday. Always will be one of my favourite Irish songs, period. Lethal Dialects unapologetically Dublin sound inspired a lot of Irish artists to be themselves, myself included.
Chet Baker – My Funny Valentine | Listen on Spotify
The first time I heard this vocal it really captivated me. It’s very tender and delicate. I try to sing like this sometimes and that can be heard at parts throughout the EP. I love the simplicity of this track also, it’s a great example of how less is more sometimes.
Saint Sister – You Never Call (James Vincent McMorrow Remix) | Listen on Spotify
This was one of my favourite songs two summers ago. I really like the instrumentation and use of midi on this track. The mix is so clean also. I was listening to it a fair bit leading up to recording the EP, it makes me feel something and that’s important in a song.
Christian Alexander – Going Thru | Listen On Spotify
I love the lo-fi feel of this song and that sound inspired the production on my song ‘Let Them Know’.
J Cole – 4 Your Eyez Only | Listen On Spotify
I had to include a J Cole song in this list. He’s one of my favourite artists and his work ethic and lyricism are big influences of mine. The storytelling in this song is second to none.
