Red Rum Club | 5 tracks that influenced ‘The Hollow of Humdrum’

Red Rum Club have released their new album ‘The Hollow of Humdrum’.

Out now via Modern Sky, the new album from the six-piece was curated in vans, hotel rooms and airports as they developed their party-starting sound that’s set to get you grooving.

To celebrate their album release, frontman Fran Doran gave us an insight into a few of the tracks that influenced ‘The Hollow Of Humdrum’.

Saint Motel – My Type | Listen via Spotify
We always wanted an upbeat funky anthem for our second album, and while we struggled to write one this was in our head mocking us. You can never tire of that saxophone riff and we wanted a hook that was just as strong and memorable. We managed to come up with ‘The Elevation’ as a rebuttal, and I don’t think we did a bad job.

Jungle – The Heat | Listen via Spotify
We played Summer Well Festival in Romania last August on the same bill as these, and we couldn’t get over how tight they were live. Their vocals were just perfect throughout, such great layering of harmonies. It definitely had an influence when arranging and recording vocal harmonies for the album, particularly the falsetto parts.

Nino Rota – Godfather Soundtrack | Listen via Spotify
‘Nobody Gets Out Alive’ from our previous album was our take on Ennio Morricone’s ‘The Good, The Bad And The Ugly’ and in a similar vein ‘Brando’ is a take on Nino Rota’s ‘The Godfather’. It’s a gorgeous soundtrack, but it has very sinister overtones in parts and we used these features as our key inspiration for ‘Brando’.

Vampire Weekend – Harmony Hall | Listen via Spotify
The piano part in this was a key inspiration for the ‘Eleanor’ demo. We loved the rhythm and how unashamedly happy the music is. ‘Eleanor’ originally had a prominent piano part in a similar style to this. It wasn’t very RRC but it inspired our most successful song so far, so we were pretty happy.

Blossoms – Your Girlfriend | Listen via Spotify
This song has an incredible groove to it, you can’t keep still when you’re listening. The bass, in particular, stood out for us, it doesn’t stop moving and we loved that. It just gives the song that great post-disco vibe, and it’s something we took into consideration when writing most of the baselines for the album.
