Remote have released their debut EP ‘I Need More Time’.
The five-track EP was self-written and produced by Alex Hiles and Ruben Harvey and marks the duo’s first multi-track project.
Speaking of their new EP, the band said: “In this project we dive into themes of uncertainty, self-discovery, and the pressure to find one’s path when it feels like time is running out. With each track, we aimed to capture the universal experience of young adults trying to make sense of their future with time slipping away from them. Musically, our EP combines elements of indie, folk and bedroom pop.”
To celebrate their EP release, Remote share with us share the stories behind the songs.
I’ll Be Fine
Playing homage to remote’s bedroom pop roots, track one, ‘I’ll Be Fine’, introduces a delicate acoustic guitar riff which graduates into a rich soundscape of distorted melodies. The woodwind and brass which lift this track towards its finale underpin remote’s emotive lyricism, diving into moments of self reflection and doubts: “Have I chosen right? I wonder”. From these moments of doubt appear an overwhelming message of reassurance from the band, that despite their current hardships, everything will be alright.
I Need More Time
The title track, ‘I Need More Time’, follows suit with ‘I’ll Be Fine’ with its punchy beat, electrifying guitar solos, and irresistibly unafraid vocals. remote effortlessly crafts the full-bodied sound of an indie five- piece using two multi-instrumentalists, delivering a head-banging indie anthem that’s as entrancing as it is explosive. ‘I Need More Time’ is exactly what it says on the tin. remote crafted this track as a heartfelt reminder to their listeners that, in moments of uncertainty and when the path ahead feels unclear, they are not alone. It’s a message of solidarity for those navigating through life’s challenges, offering comfort and reassurance that others understand and share in their journey.
Souvenir
‘Souvenir’ encapsulates the strange sense of abandonment felt after the termination of a relationship, experiences remote have felt within their late teens/ early twenties. The Alternative/ Indie-pop duo explore how one can become a souvenir of a relationship in someones memory, whether that be romantic or platonic. In the same way a fridge magnet is a memory of a holiday, remote delves into the complexities of sticking around when the other person has moved on. ‘Souvenir’ is another branch of remote’s experimentation of sounds and showcases remote’s multi-instrumental capabilities, with lush baselines, addictive lyricism, intricate guitar chords and a driving beat.
Company
Sandwiched between remotes EP pre-releases ‘Souvenir’ & ‘CAN’T DO THIS WITHOUT YOU’, track four, ’Company’ exudes a playful yet cathartic energy, with swelling live cello and layered harmonies that glide over a bold, driving drumbeat. Company is remote’s abstract take on appreciation of their surroundings. As the sibling of ‘CAN’T DO THIS WITHOUT YOU’, ‘company’ reminds listeners to check in on those around them, touch some grass, connect with nature and most importantly, connect with new friendships after the endings of old ones.
CAN’T DO THIS WITHOUT YOU
‘CAN’T DO THIS WITHOUT YOU’ is a song of wistful appreciation that encapsulates the feelings of fulfilment that appear after finding someone that you can rely on; especially those that you feel you can’t do anything without. After entering this period of unknown in their lives, remote has come to the realisation that the true strength holding them together has been the unwavering support of their friends and family. Despite their hardships, remote know that when they are surrounded by people they can’t do this without and even if they need more time to figure it out, everything will be okay in the end.
