Rosie H Sullivan has released her second EP ‘In My Nature’.
Out now, the release follows her debut project ‘123° East’ out earlier this year.
Speaking of the album, Rosie said: “This is mine, and what I am, through and through. I give to the world to hold, cherish and listen to. It is in my nature to write these words and songs and hold them in my heart. I’ll also be found, never too far from nature, in any case, by a stream, in the woods, in the long grass, by the sea. This is me, and it has been since I came to be and will continue to be for as long as I live.”
To celebrate her EP release, Rosie shares with us 5 tracks that influenced ‘In My Nature’.
Beck – Morning | Listen via Spotify
I actually heard this for the first time ever in a taxi after one of the first studio days. The next day I was in Ross asked if I’d ever heard this and put it on and I recognised it straight away. A very strange coincidence and I had this song on repeat whilst we made the record. Ross and I spent far too long obsessing over the perfection of this song, and Jamie, who did the drums on the record, also agreed that it was one of the best. It was lovely to discover a new song in the midst of making a record of my own, and I think maybe some inspiration and influence crept in to the EP.
Idlewild – In Remote Part / Scottish Fiction | Listen via Spotify
A beautiful song I discovered quite late on, shown to me by my manager, Cal. I think it’s such a raw and honest song, and they’re Scottish so obviously I’m going to love it even more. There’s a huge moment at the end where everything drops away to spoken words and the most gorgeous piano part, it’s so moving everytime I listen. This eventually inspired the closing of my song ‘Timeless’ and subsequently ends the record. When I listen to this Idlewild song I can feel it in my roots, and I think for a song to do that is just groundbreaking.
Laura Marling – Song For Our Daughter | Listen via Spotify
This song (but also this whole album) was a turning point for me in my own compositional route and everything about this song I love. Lush harmonies, beautiful lyrics, swelling strings and perfect guitar. I don’t think this will ever not be a favourite. This opened my eyes up to the possibilities of working with strings, and to be lucky enough to have Fiona Hamilton layer up the most wonderful strings on my record too – was very surreal.
Phoebe Bridgers – Motion Sickness | Listen via Spotify
Another classic favourite. We refer a lot to Phoebe in the studio, she always gets it right. For my song ‘Only A Woman’ we really wanted this crunchy / indie vibe that ‘Motion Sickness’ has the perfect balance of. The stunning guitars and heavier low end paired with the vocals that sit nicely on top is just the best combo. It felt good to spend time working on something a bit more punchy in the studio and exploring lots of different sounds.
Feist – 1234 | Listen via Spotify
One of my biggest inspirations vocally is probably Feist. This was the first song of hers I heard when I was a teenager and I’ve loved it since. It’s got this fun, playful innocence to it but still feels very mature. This song kind of taught me about the art of simplicity and not shying away from something if it feels a bit cheesy / simple, I think often the best songs can be these ones. In my song ‘Chapters’ on the record, we definitely nod to this song.
Honourable mention to Big Thief, whose albums I’ve had on repeat over the last year. I couldn’t pick a song but I drew a lot of influence and inspiration from a whole load of their ridiculously lovely songs!
